A Guide to the High School Graduation Ceremony

HONORING YOUR ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT WITH STYLE AND TRADITION There's no greater recognition of a graduate's achievement than a high school graduation ceremony, or commencement. So, what should you expect on your big day? Looking to learn how to properly wear a graduation cap and graduation gown? This guide will show you how to dress the part for your graduation ceremony, so you’re prepared to take that final step of your high school experience with pride. The History of the High School Graduation Ceremony The graduation ceremony is a tradition of saying farewell to not just adolescence, but also a high school and the faculty that has been a home to students for years. Yet the high school graduation ceremony procedure has changed over the years. Today’s ceremonies are often held in stadiums and other larger venues, whereas previously, the emphasis was on smaller, more intimate affairs. The idea of the cap-and-gown is a tradition that dates back to Europe and is older than the U.S. itself. The events surrounding a school graduation ceremony have also changed. The majority of schools in the early 1900s held various senior-specific events, such as senior plays, picnics, and the junior-senior banquet. However, these activities are rarely found in modern American high schools. Graduation parties were also different. Many high schools would take their seniors on hiking and backpacking trips across America. One Wisconsin high school in the 1930s even took its students on ...

Graduation • United States Air Force Academy

Graduation Week is traditionally comprised of many activities and events across the U.S. Air Force Academy. Cadets and their guests take part in receptions, awards ceremonies, baccalaureate services, concerts, parades, air demonstrations, and commissioning ceremonies. The week culminates at Falcon Stadium with the iconic graduation ceremony. Commencement speakers often include the President of the United States, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Air Force and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. At the close of the ceremony, cadets are dismissed and ceremoniously toss their caps into the air. Cheers and celebration are quickly silenced by the roar of the legendary Thunderbirds flying overhead to honor the graduating class. Primary venues will be used for commissioning ceremonies unless weather or other circumstances require back-up locations. Spring 2023 Commencement – Commencement – UW

Commencement is a celebration of the achievements of our graduates, and in this regard the escorts of the candidates are intended to be their major professors who have contributed significantly to their academic growth and success. Degree candidates are responsible for identifying an appropriate professor to serve as a faculty escort, and asking that person to perform the role. Degree candidates will be asked to provide the name of their faculty escort when they complete the “apply to graduate” application. Although the identities of the escorts are not confirmed, we do ask that this practice of major professor escorts be followed whenever possible. The faculty escort for a doctor of philosophy, doctor of musical arts and master of fine arts candidate sits with the candidate during the ceremony and accompanies the candidate across the platform during the march. A faculty escort is expected to wear There are instances when a major professor is not able to escort a candidate, and in those circumstances other degree committee members or other departmental faculty fulfill the escort role. When that is not possible, the marshals at commencement are prepared to serve as the escort. Faculty members who cannot afford to rent their academic attire, should contact DURING THE CEREMONY Faculty escorts always should seat themselves and march on the candidate’s right, allowing the candidate to move ahead as the candidate approaches center stage to receive the diploma folder from the dea...
