How to Paint Grass

42K Shares In this post, you will learn fundamental tips for painting grass. The idea of this post is not to show you a strict, step-by-step process. Instead, I want to take the fundamental ideas and theories and show you how they can be applied to painting grass. This is much the same format as my earlier post on • • • • • • • • • (Bonus: Identify the Basic Shapes Grass can be a challenge to paint because of all the information it provides (the strands of grass, colors, lines, shadows, highlights, etc.). Therefore, the first step for painting grass is to simplify it down to the most basic and abstract shapes. This will allow you to “see” more structure and form. In the painting below, Konstantin Korovin painted the basic shapes of light and dark and left it at that; he did not paint any of the finer details. Dan Scott, Queenstown, New Zealand, 2019 In Willard Metcalf’s Hillside Pastures, the shapes are much more complex due to all the different colors, rocks, and shadows. When the shapes are complex, it is important that you spend more attention on them at the early stage of the painting before adding more of the finer detail. Otherwise, it will be like decorating a cake before stacking the layers. Willard Metcalf, Hillside Pastures Once you have established the basic shapes, then you have the option to move on to other rendering techniques which are discussed below. But, you could leave the grass as basic shapes, like in the earlier paintings by Korovin and myself. Use D...

How to Draw Grass in 3 Different Ways Tutorial

This tutorial explains how to draw grass in three different ways. The examples include drawing grass close up, drawing patches of grass, and drawing large areas of grass. This is a fairly simple tutorial easy enough for beginners. Drawing Close Up Grass Grass close up drawing For dense close up grass (like you are looking directly at it) you can draw each individual blade. Grass close up drawing step by step You can think of drawing this type of grass as several layers with some blades of grass being in the foreground and others in the background. Simply start you drawing with a few blades and keep on adding to them. Grass close up drawing directions To make the grass look more natural be sure add in some slightly different curves for different and make some overlap in different places. Drawing Patches of Grass Grass clumps drawing This type of grass drawing can be useful for both close up drawings and larger landscape drawings. Grass clumps drawing directions As the clusters of grass are far apart grass will tend to sort of “fan out” in all directions unlike dense grass which tends to mostly go upwards. Grass clumps perspective When drawing multiple patches you can vary them in size to make them look more natural but generally the patches that are farther off in the distance should be smaller due to perspective (as in the example above). For an explanation of perspective and how it applies to drawing see: Drawing Large Areas of Grass Field of grass drawing Drawing each in...

How to Draw Grass, Ground, and Rocks

When you draw a creature, an animal or a fantastic being, the background is not that important. However, the creature still needs something to put their feet on—some kind of ground. It's not the most important element of the picture, of course, but if you gloss over it, it may make the whole illustration look incomplete. And if you pay more attention to it, your picture will certainly benefit from it! There are many types of ground you can use for your drawing. In this tutorial we'll take a close look at simple dirt, a grass field, a dry land (a semi-arid desert), and rocky ground. What You Will Need • Some sheets of paper • Hard pencil (HB) • Medium soft pencil (2B) • Soft pencil (5B or lower) • Pencil sharpener • Eraser (optional) You can read more about these tools in the introduction to 1. Draw Dirt Ground Your drawings don't always need complicated ground. Sometimes you just want to be done with it as soon as possible without actually neglecting this part of the illustration. Some simple dirt can be great for this purpose. You can find some inspiration using photos like these: • • • Step 1 No matter whether you start with the ground or add it at the end, your picture needs some kind of perspective. Show it with subtle lines—it doesn't really need to be a perfectly correct perspective; we'll just use these lines to define the area we need to cover. Use a hard pencil for this. Step 2 Dirt ground is very plain and boring, so we need to add a few details to make it more i...
