Royal Enfield's New Continental GT 650 Is a Bloody Good Time

What is it? A nod to the stripped-down cafe racers that zipped around London in the 1960s, Is it new? Yup, but it's been in the works for a minute. What makes it special? If I may be shallow for a moment, one thing that really stands out about this bike: its looks. The compact curves, bubbly gas tank and shiny chrome are simultaneously gorgeous and delightfully retro. They combine to recall a simpler time, when we didn’t need fancy electronics, touchscreens and GPS to saddle up and hit the open road. You know a bike has nailed that vibe when multiple people ask how old your bike is — and are gobsmacked when you tell them it's new. Stylish Motorcycle Boots Perfect for Everything This Continental isn’t all-show-no-go, though. While a 648cc engine may seem small for a brand like Chasing the Bullet, a charming, evocative 22-minute documentary about the bike, is Royal Enfield’s engineers put a lot of time and thought into crafting the perfect little-big engine — one with flexible power delivery, packing plenty of pop both out of the gate and at higher speeds. The twin purrs so beautifully, I found myself giddily grinning the moment I first heard it. Royal Enfield I’d be remiss not to mention one other distinguishing feature: brand-new, this bike starts just under $6,000. No matter your predilections, that’s one hell of a value play. How does it ride? Despite the old-school styling, the Continental is designed to be ridden aggressively. It’s still a café racer, after all. That b...

2019 Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 And Interceptor 650 Review

Ever since my interview last December with Rod Copes, President of Royal Enfield North America, I’ve been looking forward to experiencing the new 650 Twin the company developed for the Continental GT 650 and the Interceptor 650. The common engine and chassis underlying these two models represent just one of “several” platforms slated to be released by RE in the next 3-5 years, according to Copes. Additionally, Copes claims that these platforms will all be aimed at the 400-700cc category because Royal Enfield wants to be the global leader in the middle-weight segment, which he thinks is underutilized as most manufacturers have been exploiting the heavy-weight market with its wider profit margins. Since I am a fan of both middle-weights and parallel Twins, these were heady statements to receive. Interview: Rod Copes, President Of Royal Enfield North America With those thoughts in mind, I arrived in Santa Cruz, California where Royal Enfield had gathered over 100 members of the international moto-press for two days of riding the Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650. Would the 650 Twin be enough to propel Royal Enfield out of the niche it’s occupied in the U.S. with its funky small displacement Singles? The MO staff. I could hardly wait to get in the saddles. 2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan First Ride Review While Royal Enfield’s 650 Twin May look dated, it’s a decidedly modern unit – even with the air/oil-cooling. Every facet of the engine’s character was considered during the...

2024 Ford Mustang GT S650 vs. 2023 Chevrolet Camaro SS Specs Comparison

Both the GT and SS will be powered by V-8 engines, but both are still radically different from each other. The LT1 in the Camaro SS is still the pushrod Small Block design used by Chevrolet since the 1950s, albeit with changes to make this a very potent powerhouse under the hood of every General Motors vehicle that shares it. With a 4.06 inch bore and 3.62 inch stroke, the LT1 measures out to 6.2 liters that produces 455 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 455 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. The SS comes with a 3.73:1 for the manual-equipped setup while the automatic gets the 2.77:1 ratio. The new Mustang GT gets a 3.31:1 for the manual-equipped car, 3.55:1 for the automatic (both coming with limited slip). A 3.55:1 Torsen will come in the automatic GT and a 3.73 Torsen comes in the six-speed GT in their available Performance Pack versions. These are all similar to the 2023 Mustang, so we expect Brakes, on the other hand, are different between the Camaro SS and Mustang GT. The Camaro wears a set of 13.6 inch front rotors with four piston fixed calipers. The Mustang gets 13.86 inch rotors up front with four piston fixed calipers, and an optional setup for the GT is a set of 15.35 inch rotors with six piston Brembo calipers. This is similar to the S550, but the optional Brembos have grown roughly 0.40 inch (the rotors were 14.96 inches), and are now available in three paint finishes. The Camaro SS has a slightly longer wheelbase of 110.7 inches, barely shorter overall length of 188.3 ...

2019 Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 Review (14 Fast Facts)

The 1965 Royal Enfield Continental GT had all of the hallmarks that still define the genre—clip-on handlebars, aggressive riding positions, and an overall racy charm are indicative of any worthy bike in that class. However, the Continental GT did not survive into the 1970s. The story wasn’t over, but was dormant for decades. In 2014, the Continental GT name was revived and the new version featured a 535cc powerplant with EFI. When The GT line gets a serious boost this year with the devilishly handsome 2019 Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, which shares its all-new parallel twin motor with the upright standard INT 650.
