Winning the IPL is our only objective: Gujarat Lions owner Keshav Bansal

Absolutely, it was kind of a dream run. Coming in for the first year we were the only team to win nine league matches and that was huge for us. We were quite happy with our performance given that it was our first season. Coming to this year’s IPL, you have an interesting predicament. This will be the second and the final year for Gujarat Lions, along with Rising Pune Supergiants as per the deal with the BCCI. So keeping that in mind, how have you planned for the 2017 auction and for the season as well? When we brought the team we were quite aware of the fact that we are taking it for only two years. But it was kind of a win-win situation for us. We got to understand the process, got the taste and complete feel of the IPL and probably at one-tenth of the cost of other franchisees, because they are paying this for the last ten years. So this was a conscious decision for us and we are happy and just looking forward to the season. How to continue or not continue, those discussions will only happen after the IPL gets over. Regarding the auction I keep telling everyone that T20 is a fearless game and you need to have a really good batting side, but you need to balance it out with strong bowlers. I am a firm believer in promoting lot of Indian talent, so our strategy will be the same as last year. We have retained our core group. However, there are certain areas we have to work on like the bowling department. Bravo is injured so we need to have a strong allrounder as a replacemen...

IPL: Gujarat Lions make one obvious choice in Suresh Raina, another not so

Suresh Raina and Keshav Bansal, owner of Intex’s IPL team Gujarat Lions, at the launch in New Delhi on Tuesday. (Source: PTI) As far as names and logos go, this was a straightforward choice. A franchise based out of Gujarat christened Gujarat Lions, with a roaring lion embossed on the insignia. Given the region the team represents, it made sense when you factor in their drive to establish a local connect and reach out to the vast, and mostly prosperous and cricket-crazy, Gujarati community around the world. The choice of appointing Suresh Raina as skipper was also a sensible one. Earlier, in the draft, they weren’t disheartened after missing out on MS Dhoni (they knew beforehand as A bunch of high-profile buys you could say, and a more balanced ensemble, which according to owner Keshav Bansal was their wishlist, than Pune’s. And then chose, among a spate of high-profile coaches, Brad Hodge, who though a canny player doesn’t have much to brag about on the coaching front. A more clear-cut decision was making Raina the captain, considering his stature in the IPL, its most prolific run-getter and having not missed a single match. Tapping in on this seemingly massive fan-base, and thus creating a brand both for the franchisee and Youngest team, owner At 23, Bansal is the youngest owner of an IPL franchisee by a fair margin. But that doesn’t make his life any less taxing. Just think of the intricacies involved — the franchisee has a two-year life-span stuck on it, are ineligible...

The journey of Gujarat Lions has been exciting: Bansal

Mumbai: Keshav Bansal, the owner of Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Gujarat Lions team, is only 24 years old. As Director of Intex Technologies (India) Ltd he is known for his shrewd business brain and his passion for cricket. The players feel comfortable having a young owner around them who understands their pulses and challenges. During an interview with Gulf News Keshav speaks about his team, the challenges and varied other issues. Excerpts How was it at 24 years old to run an IPL franchise? What prompted you to take up such a challenge? I believe age is just a number and hard work is the key to any business and professional success. The journey has been exciting yet full of challenges. Leading this team has been humbling and an experience I will cherish for my lifetime. I enjoyed every aspect of it, as I truly replicated what I learnt at Intex. When we bought the team we just had three months before our first game. So, organising everything in such short time at a place where no IPL match has happened before was a big challenge. But we moved day by day. It was difficult to sell sponsorship also as Gujarat Lions had no past record. However, I think the passion and commitment towards the sport is what kept me going. Intex is major mobile phones and consumer durable company. We always look forward to connect with the youth. Cricket is the best fit for any brand to reach out to today’s youth. We have been sponsoring many cricket tournaments in the past. However, we thought b...
