Gujarat polls: From caste break

By Poulomi Saha: The deadline for filing of nominations in the hotly contested Gujarat Assembly election 2022 is over. While the scrutiny of nomination papers for the candidates desirous of contesting in the second phase of election is yet to take place, here’s a break-up of the credentials of the candidates Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded in this election. Of the 182 candidates who will contest on the saffron party’s ticket, maximum belong to Other Backward Classes (OBCs). These 58 OBC candidates belong to the Koli, Ahir, Thakor, Karadiya, Chaudhary, Vagher, Mer, Kharava, Ranagola, Madi, Panchal, Barot, Modi, Mistri, Rabari and Satvara communities. At 18, Thakors comprise the largest number of OBC sub-castes which have been chosen to represent the BJP in this election. OBCs comprise maximum chunk of Gujarat’s population. In the absence of recent data, some estimates put them at almost 40 per cent of the population. Gandhinagar South BJP candidate, Alpesh Thakor, is the prominent face of the Thakor community the BJP has fielded in this election. After OBCs, 45 Patidars have found place in the BJP's candidate list. Of these, 25 are Leuva Patels and 20 Kadva Patels. The Patidar agitation of 2015 had dented the BJP’s success in the 2017 assembly election. In 2022, the saffron party has wooed over the face of the Patidar agitation, Hardik Patel, and given him a ticket from Viramgam assembly seat.
