While the scrutiny of nomination papers for the candidates desirous of contesting in the second phase of election is yet to take place, here’s a break-up of the credentials of the candidates Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded in this election. Of the 182 candidates who will contest on the saffron party’s ticket, maximum belong to Other Backward Classes (OBCs). These 58 OBC candidates belong to the Koli, Ahir, Thakor, Karadiya, Chaudhary, Vagher, Mer, Kharava, Ranagola, Madi, Panchal, Barot, Modi, Mistri, Rabari and Satvara communities. At 18, Thakors comprise the largest number of OBC sub-castes which have been chosen to represent the BJP in this election. OBCs comprise maximum chunk of Gujarat’s population. In the absence of recent data, some estimates put them at almost 40 per cent of the population.
