Bihar : Harjot Kaur Bamhrah promoted to ACS grade

The Bihar government on Thursday (31.03.2022) promoted senior IAS officer Harjot Kaur Bamhrah (IAS:1992:BH) to the grade of Additional Chief Secretary (ACS). Row over IAS officer’s ‘free condom’ rebuke, Nitish says will take action

Talking to the media on the sidelines of an ‘investors’ meet’ held in Patna, Nitish said, “I have called a meeting of the senior officials to know the matter. We are helping to empower women. I am monitoring each and everything.” When asked about the disciplinary action against the IAS officer, the chief minister said, “Action will be initiated. I have immediately summoned the officers concerned to discuss the issue.” Nitish’s statement came barely hours after the national commission for women (NCW) took cognisance of the matter and sought an explanation from 1992-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer, who is posted as principal secretary of the state’s women and child welfare department. Incidentally, Bamhrah also heads the Bihar women and child development corporation. Earlier, social welfare department minister Madan Sahni had said that he had asked the officials of the department to look into the matter. The trouble erupted at a workshop on ‘Sashakt Beti, Samridh Bihar’ (empowered daughters, prosperous Bihar) on Tuesday. A day later a video went viral on social media showing the woman bureaucrat rebuking a girl student for asking for sanitary pads for girls. Bamhrah lost cool when the girl sought to know as to why the government cannot provide sanitary pads that would cost Rs 20 to Rs 30. “When the government is providing us school uniform, scholarship and so many things, why can’t provide Whisper (a brand of sanitary pads)?” the girl asked. The IAS officer retorted, “There is...

Bihar: Controversy sparks after IAS officer snaps back at student for asking about sanitary napkins

While the world is running towards making basic amenities available for women, the school students of Bihar had to bear the snarky comments of IAS officer Harjot Kaur Bamhrah, who also heads Bihar’s Women and Child Development Corporation. The comments and responses of the IAS officer rose to a heated argument between her and the students during a workshop on Sashakt Beti, Samriddh Bihar event which had the tag line “Towards enhancing the value of girls", as stated in a report by News18. What actually happened? A video circulated on social media displayed the argument between the two. It is seen in the video that a girl student asked, “The government provides us almost everything like school uniform, etc. Can the government give sanitary pads to us at Rs 20-30?" The audience, which mostly consisted of Class IX and X school girls, clapped. Replying to this, Bamhrah said, “Those clapping, tell me is there any end to such demands? Tomorrow you will say the government can give jeans and pants too. And after that why not some beautiful shoes? Eventually, when it comes to family planning you will expect the government to give you family planning methods, and condoms, too. Why there is need to take everything for free?" If you think this is all, then there is more to it. When one of the students reminded the officer that the country's government is formed with the help of votes, Bamhrah retorted saying, “This is heights of stupidity. Don’t vote, then. Bann jao Pakistan (become li...
