Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the tallest of them all? Soon, it will be Sardar Vallabhai Patel. The current tallest statue in the world—the 502ft high Spring Buddha Temple in China—will be eclipsed by the 597 ft. Statue of Unity aka the Sardar Vallabhai Patel statue in Gujarat when it is unveiled on 31 October. The statue is conceived as a naturalistic depiction of Sardar Patel in his traditional garb in a walking pose. It rises out of a star-shaped, geometric base that covers the entire hill of the river island of Sadhu Bet in Gujarat. This is also the best place to get a bird's eye view of the picturesque environs of the Narmada River and its dam surrounded by the Satpura and Vindhyachal hills. Right on schedule, the world's tallest statue has officially opened in India. Standing almost 600 ft (182 m) tall, the new Popularly known as Sardar Patel, and even the "Iron Man of India," Patel is remembered as a key player in India's fight for independence from Britain during the early-to-mid 20th century. The Statue of Unity stands not only as a memorial to this important historical figure, but as a monumental feat of engineering. Not including the base, the statue stands 597 ft (182 m) tall, beating the previous record-holder – the Spring Temple Buddha in China, at 502 ft (153 m) – by a fair margin. At around half the height, even the Statue of Liberty doesn't hold a torch to the newcomer.
