The Galapagos: A Natural History by Henry Nicholls, Hardcover

Charles Darwin called it "a little world within itself." Sailors referred to it as "Las Encantadas"-- the enchanted islands. Lying in the eastern Pacific Ocean, straddling the equator off the west coast of South America, the Galapagos is the most pristine archipelago to be found anywhere in the tropics. It is so remote, so untouched, that the act of wading ashore can make you feel like you are the first to do so. Yet the Galapagos is far more than a wild paradise on earth--it is one of the most important sites in the history of science. Home to over 4,000 species native to its shores, around 40 percent of them endemic, the islands have often been called a "laboratory of evolution." The finches collected on the Galapagos inspired Darwin's revolutionary theory of natural selection. In The Galapagos, science writer Henry Nicholls offers a lively natural and human history of the archipelago, charting its course from deserted wilderness to biological testing ground and global ecotourism hot spot. Describing the island chain's fiery geological origins as well as our species' long history of interaction with the islands, he draws vivid portraits of the life forms found in the Galapagos, capturing its awe-inspiring landscapes, understated flora, and stunning wildlife. Nicholls also reveals the immense challenges facing the islands, which must continually balance conservation and everencroaching development. Beautifully weaving together natural history, evolutionary theory, and his...

Watch the video here: :flag-england: — England Cricket (@englandcricket) “He’s gone. How has it got there? How has it got there? Leach has no idea,” exclaimed Nasser Hussain who was commentating then. “Mitchell is at the non-striker’s end. He’s trying to get his bat out of the way, the umpire is diving out of the way and Lees is aware. Ahh! Mitchell’s middled it straight to mid-off. I cannot believe, I really can’t,” Hussain further screamed as the broadcasters showed replays of the dismissal. "It was unbelievable, I've never seen anythi...

Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls Double Tons Put New Zealand On Top In Second Test vs Sri Lanka

Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls Double Tons Put New Zealand On Top In Second Test vs Sri Lanka Aggressive double centuries for Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls powered New Zealand's dominance in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Wellington on Saturday • Agence France-Presse • Updated: March 18, 2023 01:33 PM IST Their partnership was the fifth-highest by any New Zealand combination and they became the country's first batters to reach 200 in the same innings. Sri Lankan captain Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled to generate life on a flat Basin Reserve pitch, forcing Karunaratne to set defensive fields during much of the mammoth partnership. Williamson and Nicholls batted at a lively clip from the outset, advancing quickly from a 155-2 overnight score and barely looking troubled as they unleashed an array of attacking strokes through the first two sessions. Williamson was impenetrable as he reached three figures for the third time in successive Tests, becoming the first New Zealander to pass 8,000 runs in the process. It was a sixth double-century for the 32-year-old -- whose unbeaten 121 was pivotal in a final-ball first Test in Christchurch earlier this week. Having resumed on 26, Williamson struck 23 fours and two sixes before holing out in the deep off spinner Jayasuriya as he tried to escalate the scoring rate. Nicholls marched on from his overnight 18 to reach three figures before pushing past his previous-best score of 174. His aggressive 240-ball knock, which featur...

With its absolutely massive population (1.33 billion or one-fifth of the world's population) it's obvious that China should have a massive impact on the world. Yet, it's one-child policy, for all the uncomfortable ethical questions it raises and the painful sacrifice made by millions of Chinese families, means that China's annual percentage growth rate is low r...

King Charles ‘Frustrated’ by Prince Harry’s Behavior

Speaking to “But it only underlines the wisdom and importance of [Elizabeth II’s] decisions taken at Sandringham [the family summit in January 2020], that you cannot be half-in and half-out. Those decisions are now the royal family’s insurance—when one of its members continues to break with convention, they can point out that he is speaking as Harry Windsor, not as the Duke of Sussex, working member of the royal family representing the nation. Then, there is the deep irony of a member of the royal family talking about how the country is judged around the world, which is often by and through the royal family. It shows a deep misunderstanding by him.” — Royal source Another source, described by the Nikkhah says that A former courtier told Nikkhah: “I think he is seeking inner peace and this becomes the target—he thinks if he can bring the media to heel, it will cure his pain. Sadly, I don’t think it will. He’s still defending his mother. Nothing will take that pain away.” No invite for Harry King Charles has not invited Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the King’s Birthday Parade (aka the Trooping of the Color) next weekend. The Daily Mail reports that it will be “the first time in Harry's life that he has not been welcome at the monarch's official birthday celebrations,” and particularly significant because this is the first such celebration of the king’s reign.
