Keralite conquers Mt Denali, North America's highest peak

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shaikh Hassan Khan has embarked on a unique plan to celebrate the 75th year of the country's Independence by planting the national flag in each of the highest mountain peaks of 195 countries across the world. In his latest effort, he has conquered Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, situated in Alaska which has a height of 20,310 feet above sea level. Hassan who has already conquered Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro, said that conquering Denali was not easy. "It is situated in a remote location and there is absolutely no assistance from the US government which means that you are all on your own in the expedition. The temperature is too adverse at minus 51 degree Celsius. The hidden crevasses pose a major threat," he told TOI over the phone from Denver. It took him 21 days for the expedition, carrying 80kg of material on his back, only to spend just five minutes on the peak to plant the national flag. Mountaineering has been a passion for Hassan, an assistant section officer in the finance department in the secretariat and a native of Pandalam, since 2017 when he joined the government service as an assistant liaison officer in Kerala House, New Delhi. "Mountaineering became a passion when I visited the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling. I did a basic course in mountaineering from Uttarakhand and then an advanced course from Darjeeling," he said. Being a government employee, he is facing two major challenges -- the leave tha...
