House of the Dragon: What to Expect in Future Seasons

Get ready to see a lot of this table. Photo: HBO For any viewers who thought House of the Dragon lacked action in its first season, rest assured: There’s potential for battle after battle that could blow Game of Thrones seem downright merciful. George R. R. Martin Fire & Blood or A World of Ice & Fire will make it into the show, and there will likely be some new scenes, characters, or plotlines that aren’t in the books. (For example, Rhaenys’s dramatic escape from the Dragonpit in House of the Dragon. And, oh yeah: Spoiler Warning. We’re going to essentially spoil the entire show. (Though Joffrey Baratheon openly talked about who won the Dance of the Dragons back in a season three episode of Game of Thrones, so how much are we spoiling, really?) The Dance Kicks off With Some Child Murder Season one of House of the Dragon In a very Westeros version of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, child-murder begets child-murder, and so King Aegon retaliates by sending Ser Arryk Cargyll to Dragonstone to impersonate his identical twin brother Ser Erryk and kill Rhaenyra’s children or the queen herself; maybe both. However, Erryk spots Arryk and the twins die fighting each other. Jaehaerys will, uh, not be the only child who dies in the Dance, so if the kid-death isn’t really your thing, the rest of House of the Dragon might not be for you. But, hey! The good news is that there should be no more graphic birth sequences. The Battles Begin in Earnest, and There Are Casualties The books House ...

“Game of Thrones” introduced audiences to the various houses, great and small, that populate the lands in and around Westeros — starting with the Targaryens, Starks, Baratheons and Lannisters. Set almost 200 years before the events of the flagship series, “ At the outset, “House of the Dragon” is primarily focused on members of House Targaryen, the current ruling family, and their closest allies. But Whether you’re new to Westeros or making a long-awaited return, here’s everything you need know about the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, updated weekly. House Targaryen A noble family of Valyrian descent who left their homeland before its collapse. The clan of dragon-riders became the first ruling house of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros thanks to a successful conquest led by King Aegon Targaryen; the family ruled over Westeros for almost 300 years. In order to keep their bloodlines pure, Targaryens often married their siblings or cousins. (“Game of Thrones” fans know how that played out.) One of the most well-known houses in the franchise, the Targaryens are still prosperous when “House of the Dragon” begins, but peaceful times do not generally translate into eventful television. Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) The current ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and the fifth Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne. Recap: In 'House of the Dragon' episode 9, the search for an heir gets literal : NPR

" Usurp? We all surp!" L to R: Otto (Rhys Ifans), Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Criston (Fabien Frankel) discuss the reason for the treason. HBO By the time it's done, HBO's House of the Dragon will have adapted a hefty, 225-page chunk of George R.R. Martin's 737-page 2018 book, Fire & Blood. Season one is on track to churn through roughly 75 pages' worth. If you do the math, factoring in five seasons, it doesn't square. But of course adaptation isn't a function of strict, empirical mathematics. Choices are made to condense or breezily elide certain characters and events, while assiduously and deliberately unpacking others. Also, Fire & Blood isn't a conventional fantasy novel filled with fully dramatized scenes to reproduce — it instead presents itself as one historian's attempt to reconcile various conflicting accounts of discrete milestone events that occurred long before his time. Hence this season's time-jumps and actor re-castings, which attempt to account for the sweep of years. I think it's safe to say we're done with the time-jumps now, as the civil war this show is fixing to dramatize — the so-called Dance of the Dragons — takes place over the course of just three years. So with the coronation of Aegon II, the triggering event of the Dance, these are our players for the duration. The characters in Blood & Fire are a lot more... linear, shall we say, than those of House of the Dragon. More ruthless, more single-minded, less troubled by stirrings of doubt and empathy....

'House of the Dragon' Episode 6: That Confusing Trailer Explained

HBO's House of the Dragon delivered a bloody episode 5. But if you stayed past the credits to catch a preview of episode 6, you might have felt a bit confused. Suddenly, we see new actors in major rolesand the plot has leapfrogged years into the future, where we spot... King Viserys? What in the Westeros is going on here? Spoilers ahead, naturally. How far did the show jump in time? The preview starts with a dragon flying, and then a member of the king's Small Council saying, "We should address the latest development in the Stepstones." Wait, didn't Prince Daemon already handily do that by cutting the Crabfeeder in half? Ohhh, wait, this isn't a rerun. The Stepstones are giving Viserys ulcers once again. Queen Alicent, now played by Olivia Cooke, age 28, instead of Emily Carey, 19, helpfully tells us it's been a decade since Daemon fought that battle, and he's since left the region undefended. Was this ... supposed to be his permanent job going forward? Doesn't leave a lot of time for murdering wives and fooling around with nieces. But what we take from this: It's about 10 years in the future, so get ready to see your favorite and least favorite characters aged, and in some cases, recast. New Rhaenyra and Alicent, same old feud The camera then cuts to Princess Rhaenyra, formerly played by Milly Alcock, 22, and now played by Emma D'Arcy, 30. From the way Rhaenyra corrects her queen and former BFF, and the way Alicent cocks her head and gives Rhaenyra the death stare, it see...

House of the Dragon season 1 is done. Excitement was high for Game of Thrones itself has a complicated legacy. We got some answers about House of the Dragon's scope early in the season when it was renewed for a second season, revealing it'd take more than 10 episodes to tell the tale of the Targaryen civil war.
