What Strava Data Can Tell Us About How to Run a Fast 100

In our While no runner who finishes the Here’s how successful runners train for the Western States 100. The Peak Week The median peak week for a WSER finisher was 81 miles and 16 hours, with an accumulated elevation of 13.5K feet of vertical gain (we use medians rather than averages to eliminate outlier data). The median longest run was 50 miles, and 43 percent of athletes did at least a 100K run in the lead-up to States. Sixty-five percent of runners did at least one race in the build-up to fine-tune their race day strategies and log more time on feet. That’s some significant volume! But not everyone started with huge training weeks. The median base going into the six-month lead-up to WSER was a modest 37 miles with 2,700 feet of climbing, and a median 12-mile long run. How’d they build volume and experience going into the race? RELATED: According to Strava data, about a quarter (22 percent) of athletes do their peak week four weeks out from race day (and many participate in the Memorial Weekend Western States Training Runs, which strings together a 50K, 19-, and 20-mile days). Eleven percent of finishers log their biggest week five weeks before race day, and 19 percent peak three weeks out. While there’s not a huge difference between peaking three and four weeks out, those weeks are overrepresented among finishers versus peaking five weeks out. In April 2003, early in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, a battalion from the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Divison combined 29 M-1 tanks, 14 M-2 fighting vehicles and several M-113 armored personnel carriers into an urban assault task force—and rolled straight into Baghdad days ahead of a planned multi-brigade coalition attack on the city. Schwartz was right. His battalion thunder run on April 5 breached Baghdad and killed potentially hundreds of Iraqi troops and paramilitaries at the cost of a single American killed-in-action. A bigger thunder run two days later was costlier for the Americans, but ended with U.S. forces securing a major lodgement in downtown Baghdad, greatly accelerating the city’s fall. Twenty years later, the Ukrainian 35th Marine Brigade is more than a week into its own prolonged thunder run along the Mokri Yaly River. In eight or nine days of hard fighting, the 2,000-person brigade has liberated several villages—most recently Makarivka, on Monday. Speed and shock are key. The 35th Marine Brigade is fairly lightly equipped for a Ukrainian brigade, with dozens of ex-British Mastiff and ex-Turkish Kirpi armored trucks and around 10 gas-turbine T-80BV tanks. Proper running form reduces your risk of fatigue and ensures that you are getting the most out of your run. Follow these tips to work on perfecting your form. Verywell / Ryan Kelly Don't stare at your feet. Your eyes should be focused on the ground about 10 to 20 feet ahead of you. Not only is this proper running form, but it's also a safer way to run because you can see what's coming and Is your head jutting forward as you run? This puts a lot of stress on the neck and shoulder muscles, which can lead to tension. To make sure you're not leaning forward with your head when you're running, hold it so that your ears are right over the middle of your shoulders. Keep Hands at Your Waist Try to keep your hands at waist level, right about where they might lightly brush your hip. Your arms should be bent at a 90-degree angle. Some beginners have a tendency to hold their hands way up by their chest, especially as they get tired. You may actually get even more tired by holding your arms that way and you'll start to feel tightness and tension in your shoulders and neck. Interval training Warm up for 10 minutes by jogging slowly. Then run a high-intensity pace (where you can’t hold a conversation comfortably) for 2 to 5 minutes. Jog for the same amount of time to recover. Repeat 4 to 6 times. Do this a minimum of once or twice per week until you’ve comfortably reached your desired speed. Tempo training The goal is to run at a tempo pace, or a comfortably hard pace. It should be slightly faster than your target goal time. Run at this pace for a few minutes, followed by several minutes of jogging. Work up to 10 to 15 minutes of tempo pace for a 5K and 20 to 30 minutes of running at your tempo pace for longer races. Hill training If you’re planning on running a race that has hills, it’s important to train on them. Pick a hill that’s of similar length and incline to the one you’ll encounter in the race.
