First look review of the new HP Dragonfly Folio G3, the most innovative PC of 2022 (so far)

HP seems to agree as it's back with not a replacement per se but a new Folio aimed at its super-premium business users. It’s called the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 and marks the third addition to this top tier of laptops (the other is a Chromebook and a I’ve spent the last week with the prototype, and frankly, I’m blown away by it. With an 8MP front-facing AI camera, All the postures of the Dragonfly Folio G3. (Image credit: HP) The design of the Dragonfly Folio G3 is just that: A folio-inspired laptop. It has a faux leather (polyurethane) cover on the top, and the bottom is made from recycled magnesium. The computer is taller at the back and nicely slopes down to the front making it wonderful to hold when carrying. The beauty of the Dragonfly Folio G3’s design is the ability to use it in three modes: 1. Standard laptop 2. Media mode with the display brought forward while still leaving access to the touchpad 3. Creative mode where the display lays slightly angled for drawing or notetaking It’s the best design for a 2-in-1 as you never have to lift the device off your lap. If you’re watching a movie, pull the screen forward for a more immersive experience, but unlike a Surface, Pro flipped around, you can still use the touchpad. The drawing mode (level 3) is also the best inking angle you can get as it resembles a drafting table. HP Dragonfly Folio G3 Review

I was picked to write the "20 Most Influential PCs" feature for PCMag's 40th Anniversary coverage because I remember them all—I started on a TRS-80 magazine in 1982 and served as editor of Computer Shopper when it was a 700-page monthly. I was later the editor in chief of Home Office Computing, a magazine that promoted using tech to work from home two decades before a pandemic made it standard practice. Even in semiretirement in Bradenton, Florida, I can't stop playing with toys and telling people what gear to buy. HP Elite Dragonfly G3 Review: Expensive, but Excellent

HP's Elite Dragonfly first flitted onto the premium business convertible laptop scene in 2019, as an impressive, attractive competitor to the likes of Lenovo's ThinkPad and Dell's XPS 13. After last year's Dragonfly Max added a higher-priced 5G-capable option (without a whole lot of substantive extras) HP is back with its third-gen Elite Dragonfly G3. This latest Dragonfly ditches the convertible fold-over hinge of previous models, in favor of a more traditional clamshell design and a nice productivity-friendly 3:2 display that's bright enough to use in most environments at 50% without it feeling too dim. The Dragonfly G3 starts at just 2.19 pounds, while still feeling rigid and road ready. And despite its slim 0.64-inch profile, HP manages to squeeze in more useful ports than the competition, including two Thunderbolt 4 ports (one on each side), a USB Type-A port with a drop-down hinge and even full-size HDMI. Its keyboard is also quite satisfying for a super-slim ultraportable. And there's a five-megapixel webcam housed above the display, so your colleagues can get a better look at you doing remote meetings — for better and worse. If you're after a no-compromises ultralight business notebook and don't care for convertibles, the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 is about as good as it gets, making it a strong contender for our best ultraportables and premium laptops list. But with a starting price of just under $2,000 ($2,686 as tested with a Core i7-1265U CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512G...

HP Dragonfly Folio G3 Review: Silent Assassin, Premium Pricing

Weighing in at 3.09 pounds, the Dragonfly Folio G3 is nearly a pound heavier than the more conventional Dragonfly G3. You might think that's the price you pay for the more complex hinge mechanism necessary for a 2-in-1 convertible, except the HP manages to pack in some pleasing features, like an 8-megapixel webcam, a magnetically-attached stylus, a comprehensive HP-branded software suite and a potent B&O-tuned audio system. On the other hand, there are some misses, like the smaller battery (compared to the Dragonfly G3) and the overly reflective glossy display. For those looking for a high-end business-oriented convertible, the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 ticks many of the requisite boxes for consideration among the best ultraportable and premium laptops. However, be cognizant that stepping into the Dragonfly Folio G3 domain doesn’t come cheap. The convertible starts at just under $2,400, and our review unit nearly hit $2,800 when equipped with a Core i7-1265U processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD and a 5G modem. • HP Dragonfly Folio G3 at Amazon for £2,504.12 Design of the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 The magnesium chassis of the HP Dragonfly Folio G3 is sturdy with minimal flex. It has a high-quality finish in dark gray with just a hint of shimmering flakes embedded. That sparkly finish extends to the backlit keyboard. It's a full-size keyboard, but due to the trim dimensions of the device, it does not have a number pad. A large glass Microsoft Precision Touchpad is included. Dominating ...

HP Dragonfly Folio G3 hands

For those who don’t obsessively follow the convertible laptop space (and first of all, how could you be so ignorant? Go stand in the corner), the folio design puts a flex point in the middle of the G3’s screen, which that screen is able to rotate backward or forward around. It can also be pulled forward to be angled like a tent over the keyboard, folded into a tablet, or just used like a regular laptop. While I know better than to expect too much out of prototype units, I just keep running into stuff that’s weirdly great about this one. The keyboard is one of the clickiest, most comfortable ones that I’ve used for quite some time. The 8MP webcam is crisp and clear. The speakers sound good at nowhere near maximum volume. Even the key backlighting just looks quite beautiful to me. (I was not, by the way, saying all of this stuff about the Honestly — and this is a thing I feel like I’ve said about so many excellent machines this year — if this thing didn’t have negative seven ports (okay, that’s an exaggeration — there are Thunderbolt 4 and a headphone jack), I would be trying to keep it for as long as possible. Some laptops have an unspeakable quality that makes them fun to use, and these folio ones really are fun. I can run all the benchmarks in the world on a thing, and then I can also ask myself: am I sad that I have to return it? The answer, for the Folio G3, is yes. I am going to miss this little thing.
