The future is here: iPhone X

“For more than a decade, our intention has been to create an iPhone that is all display. The iPhone X is the realization of that vision,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “With the introduction of iPhone ten years ago, we revolutionized the mobile phone with Multi-Touch. iPhone X marks a new era for iPhone — one in which the device disappears into the experience.” “iPhone X is the future of the smartphone. It is packed with incredible new technologies, like the innovative TrueDepth camera system, beautiful Super Retina display and super fast A11 Bionic chip with neural engine," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone X enables fluid new user experiences — from unlocking your iPhone with Face ID, to playing immersive AR games, to sharing Animoji in Messages — it is the beginning of the next ten years for iPhone.” iPhone X introduces a revolutionary design with a stunning all-screen display that precisely follows the curve of the device, clear to the elegantly rounded corners. The all-glass front and back feature the most durable glass ever in a smartphone in silver or space gray, while a highly polished, surgical-grade stainless steel band seamlessly wraps around and reinforces iPhone X. A seven-layer color process allows for precise color hues and opacity on the glass finish, and a reflective optical layer enhances the rich colors, making the design as elegant as it is durable, while maintaining water and dust resista...

iPhone X Review

The iPhone X is an innovative device with a fantastic camera and beautiful display, but other phones are tougher and can operate longer on a charge. Those are among the conclusions we've reached after completing testing on Apple's new flagship model, which starts at $1,000 for the 64-gigabyte version. Overall, the iPhone X—as in 10, not the letter that follows W—easily made It was edged out by Apple's less-expensive iPhone 8, starting at $700, and 8 Plus, starting at $800, which both proved hardier in a test designed to reproduce the drops and fumbles that can cause cracked screens and other damage. "If not for the damage in that durability test, the iPhone X would have come in ahead of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus," says Richard Fisco, head of smartphone testing at CR. Given how close the scores of all the phones in our top 10 are, it's not really a question of which phone is best but which is the best fit for you. If you're choosing among the new crop of iPhones, one of the most obvious differences is the lack of a Home button on the iPhone X and the advent of Face ID for unlocking the phone (more on that below). Additionally, the iPhone X has the biggest screen of the three—5.8 inches, measured diagonally, compared with 5.5 inches for the iPhone 8 Plus and 4.7 inches for the 8. But that expansive display comes in a tight package: The iPhone X is just a smidge taller than the iPhone 8 at 5.6 inches, and more than a half-inch shorter than the iPhone 8 Plus. Here's a closer loo...

iPhone X review: This iPhone XS predecessor is still a contender

I started with CNET reviewing laptops in 2009. Now I explore wearable tech, VR/AR, tablets, gaming and future/emerging trends in our changing world. Other obsessions include magic, immersive theater, puzzles, board games, cooking, improv and the New York Jets. My background includes an MFA in theater which I apply to thinking about immersive experiences of the future. iPhone X remains a winning evolution of the iPhone, and is worth a look -- if you can still find it on sale. Editors' note, Sept. 12, 2018:The iPhone X reviewed here is no longer being sold by Apple, but the iPhone 8 is now available in its place at a reduced price of $599. See all of the new iPhones and new products that Apple just announced. Update: Spring/summer 2018 The iPhone X was unveiled in September 2017 and released on November 3. And since then, it's remained at the top of the smartphone hill. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and the Huawei P20 Pro made some interesting advancements in photography, but nothing else has come close to matching the iPhone X's revolutionary Face ID unlocking system. Instead, an increasingly large number of Android phones have taken to straight-up copying the iPhone X's distinctive notch -- the thing that was arguably its most controversial and divisive design decision. +45 more See all photos So while the iPhone X remains an excellent, industry-leading smartphone, it's probably not one you should run out and buy. That's because its successor -- or, possibly, a trio of succes...

iPhone X review: Should you still buy Apple's old flagship phone in 2019?

The iPhone X isn’t sold officially by Apple anymore, having been replaced first by the If you pick up the iPhone X now you’ll still be getting a great buy. It has just been updated to The iPhone X remains a strong buy in other areas too. It looks very similar to the latest iPhone 11 Pro, has a great screen (that supports HDR in iTunes and Netflix) and a camera that still stands up there with the better ones you can buy. If you want a slightly bigger device that might even come in cheaper than the iPhone X it might be worth looking at the if you want to know more about the iPhone X you can read our original review below. iPhone X Design – This phone reignited Apple’s phone design skills Apple has been coasting for too long with the design it introduced for the iPhone 6, but that all changes with the iPhone X – in a big way. You don’t need me to tell you the iPhone X is a huge departure from the iPhone design of old – just look at the pictures. Not only does it look good, however; Apple has done a fantastic job at actually making it feel really good too. Related: This phone is simply gorgeous. It’s slightly taller than the iPhone 8 (and 7 and 6) but much narrower and smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus. It strikes the perfect balance, especially since you’re getting a 5.8-inch display here. The aluminium sides have been swapped out for stainless steel – as seen on the Apple Watch – and the front and rear of the device are glass. I received the Silver variant for review – and, unf...

Don't like • Only Pro models get the 2x telephoto • The ultrawide-angle camera doesn’t add Night Mode • No USB-C port • The Pro phones have a faster 18-watt charger but the iPhone 11 doesn't • Still has a good -- but not OLED -- display. Like • The iPhone X delivers a great blend of handheld comfort and a big, gorgeous 5.8-inch OLED screen • The rear-facing telephoto camera outshoots the iPhone 8 Plus in low light, and the front-facing camera snaps impressive portrait mode selfies • Face ID generally works fine. Don't like • The iPhone X is harder to get following the release of the iPhone XS • The all-glass body means a case and an insurance plan are musts • Shorter battery life than iPhone 8 Plus. iPhone X review

The iPhone X was a huge gamble from Apple, yet one that really paid off six months into our testing. Losing the home button and altering the design was a dangerous move, but one that was sorely needed after years of similarity and the premium design, extra power, all-screen front mix together to create - by far - the best iPhone Apple's ever made. It's impossible to give a perfect score to something that costs this much - but this is the closest to smartphone perfection Apple has ever got. Apple itself is calling it the future of the smartphone, the embodiment of what it’s been trying to achieve for a decade. But while the iPhone X is all about premium parts and an all-new experience, it was a huge gamble for the Cupertino brand too – which paid off, as every new iPhone since then had largely kept the design, until the Losing known, reliable elements like the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, the home button; introducing new methods of navigating and unlocking the phone – and charging a lot more for the privilege – seems risky for a company that was already treading new ground by doing away with the traditional headphone jack. The fervor around this phone tells that story – everyone wants to know if the iPhone X is worth having, partly because it actually represents a new iPhone, and that fervor is such that they don’t seem to care about the cost. Thankfully, that cost has come down over the years, and it's still a powerful phone. So… is the iPhone X worth having? Did it chang...
