The Core Curriculum is designed to ensure that all Illinois Institute of Technology graduates have a basic understanding of certain essential areas of knowledge. The Core Curriculum sets minimal requirements. Most degree programs require additional courses in these areas. These additional course requirements are found in the departmental listings. Core Curriculum requirements will not be waived. Substitutions may be considered upon written request to the Office of Academic Affairs. Approval will be granted on an individualized basis and then, only under extraordinary circumstances. • Illinois Institute of Technology recognizes the importance of critical thinking, writing, and oral communication in all academic pursuits and in professional practice. Illinois Institute of Technology is committed to a campus-wide program that engages students in the practice of written and oral communication in all disciplines. This program includes the following components: • Basic Writing Proficiency (BWP). Incoming degree-seeking (not visiting or exchange) students are expected to have a basic level of writing skills, which Illinois Institute of Technology refers to as the BWP requirement. There are several ways for incoming students to demonstrate that they have met this requirement: • They can take an appropriate optional section of the ACT or SAT exam and pass it. What is the Kaplan Institute? With a focus on innovative thinking, entrepreneurship, and transitioning new ideas into products and processes, the Kaplan Institute is the first new academic building built on Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus in more than 40 years. The Kaplan Institute will house unique facilities and equipment for implementing novel, educational, and entrepreneurial strategies, programs and initiatives. It will feature workshops, media labs, classrooms, collaborative hubs, new and emerging technologies, and “maker spaces.” Who are the benefactors? The lead benefactors are Ed Kaplan (ME ’65)—an Illinois Tech alumnus, longtime member of the university’s Board of Trustees, and vice chair of the Executive Committee of the board—along with his wife, Carol. Ed Kaplan is a Chicagoan who co-founded Zebra Technologies, a global leader in barcode printing technology. $10 million of the Kaplans′ gift represented a successful challenge grant to help encourage and support the development and construction of the new building. To date, 14 other donors have contributed at least $1 million to the institute. The building is also funded by the generous philanthropy of hundreds of faculty, staff, and alumni donors. Introduction Illinois Tech's Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides a secure, encrypted, network connection over the Internet between authorized Illinois Tech users and the university network. The VPN offers secure access for faculty and staff who need access to information technology systems that are not otherwise available from off-campus networks. VPN - Setup and Connect Using the Cisco AnyConnect • • Policy • The VPN does not provide Internet connectivity; it provides secure access into Illinois Tech's network.
