Bhubaneswar: Forecasted Cyclone ‘Jawad’ over the Bay of Bengal may affect coastal Odisha as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) on December 4, indicated IMD-GFS model. As per the prediction by the model, the system as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) may be present over west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal (BoB) off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts at 1800 UTC (11:30 pm IST) on December 3, over north-west and adjoining west-central BoB off south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts at 00 UTC (5:30 am IST) on December 4, close to south Odisha coast at 0600 UTC (11:30 am IST) on December 4 and over coastal Odisha at 1200 UTC (5:30 pm IST) on December 4. The model also indicated further northeastward movement of the system along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal with gradual weakening up to 1200 UTC (5:30 pm IST) on December 6. Notably, cyclonic storms having wind speed of 167-221 kmph are categorized as Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Temperature likely to rise in Pune in coming days: IMD

The city will witness a rise in temperature over the next few days after experiencing below-normal temperatures over the past week, mostly due to continuous spells of rainfall, as per India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Monday evening, the city received moderate rainfall along with thunder activities. (Ravindra Joshi/HT PHOTO) Currently, the city is experiencing two to three degrees Celsius below-normal temperatures along with cloudy weather and light rainfall in many areas. Speaking about the current weather conditions, KS Hosalikar, head of Climate Research and Services, said, “Low-pressure area formed over South-East Bay of Bengal and adjacent Andaman Sea on Monday morning. This will intensify in a depression on May 9, and further into a cyclonic storm over the South-East Bay of Bengal and the surrounding East-Central Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on May 10. This formation is pulling all the inland moisture.” Currently, there is no weather system activated over Maharashtra. Therefore, the sky will mainly clear and the weather will be dry, said officials. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a cyclonic storm, Cyclone Mocha, in the southeast Bay of Bengal. Between May 7 and May 9, the cyclonic storm is expected to make a landfall on the eastern coast of the country. Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation, a low pressure area is likely to form over the the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 7 and then concentrate into a depression over the same region on May 8. “Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic storm may take shape around May 9,” the officials said. In view of Cyclone Mocha, fishermen have been warned not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas Sunday onwards. “Fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers are advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7 onwards and into adjoining central BoB from May 9 onwards,” said HR Biswas, Head & Scientist, MeT centre, Bhubaneswar.
