Congress MLA Imran Khedawala resigns in protest

AHMEDABAD: “My assembly constituency includes Jamalpur, Khadia and Behrampura wards. After the high command selected four nominees for Behrampura, I conveyed the decision to them and all of them filed their nomination papers on Saturday. I was then informed that two more candidates have filed papers as Congress candidates from Behrampura wards,” said Khedawala. “I have submitted my resignation letter to Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president. I have been asked to wait till Tuesday. On Tuesday, if the party fails to address my grievances, I will tender my resignation to the Gujarat assembly speaker Rajendra Trivedi,” he said. Khedawala said that at a time when a minority-dominant party is trying to make foray into minority-dominated areas, such moves will definitely affect the Congress prospects of winning elections. The Congress is facing dissent especially in the selection of candidates for the forthcoming local body elections in Gujarat. In the past also, leader of opposition in AMC, Dinesh Sharma had resigned following some differences. Sources close to Sharma said that the city has two groups of Congress MLAs —one from the far eastern parts of the city and the other from the Walled City areas. This had created a rift among the party MLAs, leading to Sharma’s resignation.
