Is there a way you can publish major version for all the documents in a document library in one go? I have tried switching the Versioning Settings from "Create major and minor (draft) versions" to "Create major versions" and back but that didn't automatically publish a version for the documents. Edit: Ok, I found out that you could do it using SharePoint Designer by opening the library -> select all files -> check out -> check in as major version. Actually, you don't need SharePoint Designer in order to achieve this. Instead you can use " Content and Structure" which is built into the SharePoint UI itself. "Content and Structure" is availabe on the Site Settings page after you have turned on the Site Collection scoped feature "SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" (this is the name in SharePoint 2010).

How to get rid of old versions without deleting them one by one?

In about 50 doc libs (with drawings)we had versioning (minor and major) ON. Since this whole site becomes quit big (25 GB), I wanted to run a test on our testenvironment to set off all the versioning and check the size of the site afterwards. NowI turned off versioning in all doc libs, but nothing happens on the size of the site. So I notice that sharepoint 'keeps' all the versions, even if they're now not visible for the end-user. How can I get rid of the old versions, without 'deleting' them one by one? (You might have to turn versioning on again for this to work). Go to each doc lib in turn and change the number of versions allowed to (say) one. This will (I have read elsewhere) remove all the versions beyond the one it keeps. I have a document library inside our sharepoint online classic team site, which have minor/major versions enabled and the limit for the number of major version = 100. while the " Keep drafts for the following number of major versions:" is being unchecked, as follow:- Currently in our case we can have minor versions and publish them as major versions. where i think that the maximum number of major versions we can have will be 100. but i am not sure what will be the effect of leaving the" Keep drafts for the following number of major versions:" unchecked ?? You can see the version history of a modern page or news post and compare versions in SharePoint, including comparing changes visually on the page. You can see when a page was changed and who changed it. You can also see when properties (information about the file) were changed. If you need to, you can restore a previous version or delete a previous version. I have a document library with major and minor versioning enabled. Within this library we have documents that most people in the business need to see both minor and major versions, although only certain people can edit them. What I am trying to do is have it so that there is a view which shows only the major versions of the documents, even if there is a minor version in existence and another view which shows all the minor (draft) versions of the documents. Essentially having a draft library view and a published library view. Is this possible? I am using SP2013 Thanks Sean It is possible to do this however you will need a workflow to run behind the scenes to create a sneaky URL with some specific elements in it to show the latest Published version of any document - i.e. the Major release. Basically the way SharePoint manages previous version of documents is in using a set of hidden folders of all the previous versions. The first Published version of any document gets set up as this:- _vti_history/512/library-name/file-name as you can see there is an extra bit in the ( /_vti_history/512/ ) which is used to denote the first published version. So if you need to access version 1.0 put that extra bit in the URL BEFORE the library name, then paste it in a browser and see what happens. If you wnat version 2.0 of a document, you'll need to change the '512' in 1024. Version 3.0 becomes 1536, v4.0 uses 2048 and so on.
