Language is an important part of communication between humans. It helps individuals to communicate easily and share their thoughts, feelings and ideas through spoken words. Every community, be it a small group living together, a country or people living in the same geographical area has its language. India, a geographically and culturally diverse country witnesses varied languages that are spoken in different parts of the nation. As mentioned in the eighth schedule of the constitution of India, there are 22 constitutional languages, namely; Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili, and Dogri. Some of these languages have different variants based on the demographics of an area. Moreover, there are a wide variety of local and tribal languages that are spread across the nation but are not mentioned in the constitution. Unlike other nations, India does not give the status of ‘national language’ to any language. Instead, Article 343 (1) of the Indian constitution made the “Hindi” language in the Devanagari script the official language of the country that should be used for all official purposes. Punjab, state of The word Punjab is a panj (“five”) and āb (“water”), thus signifying the land of five waters, or five rivers (the panca nada, Mahabharata. As applied to the present Indian state of Punjab, however, it is a misnomer: since the partition of India in 1947, only two of those rivers, the Sutlej and the Beas, lie within Punjab’s territory, while the Ravi flows only along part of its western border. Area 19,445 square miles (50,362 square km). Pop. (2011) 27,704,236. Land Relief, drainage, and soils Punjab spans three physiographic regions, the smallest being the chos, several of which terminate in the plain below without joining any stream. To the south and west of the foothills lies the broad flat tract, with low-lying floodplains separated by slightly elevated uplands. This region, with its fertile alluvial soils, slopes gently from an elevation of about 900 feet (275 metres) in the northeast to about 550 feet (170 metres) in the southwest. The southwestern part of the plains, formerly strewn with sand dunes, has mostly been levelled off with the expansion of irrigation projects. • • • • • Covering a total land area of 3,287,263 sq.km, India is the world’s 7 th largest and the 2 nd-most populous country; that extends from the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the tropical rain forests in the south. As observed on the map, the Himalayas form the highest mountain range in the world, and slope southwards into a large fertile plain that covers most part of the country. The Himalayas comprises of three parallel mountain ranges including the Himadri, Himachal and Shivaliks, that extends from the Indus River in the northwest, to the Brahmaputra River in the east. All these mountain ranges are interspersed with deep canyons, plateaus and valleys. The highest point in India is Mount Kanchenjunga which rises to 28,208 ft. (8,598 m).
