15 Great Speeches to Remind America what Independence Day is About

This year we will celebrate the 244 th anniversary of American independence. This day does not only represent the creation of a new nation, but the creation of a new civilization, one founded on the principles of freedom, self-government, and equality. Here are 15 speeches to inspire new vigor for our founding principles. Looking at who and what we were will help us remember who and what we ought to be. 1. Patrick Henry, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” 1775 Patrick Henry gave this speech in 1775 at the Virginia Convention. It took place only a few months after the assembly of the first Continental Congress had sent King George III a petition for the redress of grievances. Boston Harbor was also blockaded by the British in retaliation for the Boston Tea Party. Tensions were high, revolution seemed inevitable, but still many political leaders in Virginia held out hope that the relationship with Great Britain could be restored. Patrick Henry sought to dispel them of that notion. Patrick Henry was a lawyer and had a reputation as one of the greatest opponents of British taxation. In this speech he argues passionately for independence. He made his case clear in the opening of his speech stating, “For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery…” He chides the assembly for indulging in “illusions of hope” for passively waiting “to be betrayed with a kiss” and for falling prey to the siren songs of the British. He reminds the assembly of th...

WATCH: 'What to the slave is the Fourth of July?' By Frederick Douglass : NPR

NPR YouTube In the summer of 2020, the U.S. commemorated Independence Day amid nationwide protests for racial justice and systemic reforms in the wake of George Floyd's death. That June, we asked five young descendants of Frederick Douglass to read and respond to excerpts of his famous speech, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?". It's a powerful, historical text that reminds us of the ongoing work of liberation. A text version of the full speech is available This video was inspired by Jennifer Crandall's documentary project "Whitman, Alabama." Visit whitmanalabama.com .

July 4, 1914: Fourth of July Address

Transcript Mr. Chairman and Fellow-Citizens: We are assembled to celebrate the one hundred and thirty-eighth anniversary of the birth of the United States. I suppose that we can more vividly realize the circumstances of that birth standing on this historic spot than it would be possible to realize them anywhere else. The Declaration of Independence was written in Philadelphia; it was adopted in this historic building by which we stand. I have just had the privilege of sitting in the chair of the great man who presided over the deliberations of those who gave the declaration to the world. My hand rests at this moment upon the table upon which the declaration was signed. We can feel that we are almost in the visible and tangible presence of a great historic transaction. Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence or attended with close comprehension to the real character of it when you have heard it read? If you have, you will know that it is not a Fourth of July oration. The Declaration of Independence was a document preliminary to war. It was a vital piece of practical business, not a piece of rhetoric; and if you will pass beyond those preliminary passages which we are accustomed to quote about the rights of men and read into the heart of the document you will see that it is very express and detailed, that it consists of a series of definite specifications concerning actual public business of the day. Not the business of our day, for the matter with which it deals ...

Will Smith Said Bill Pullman's 'Independence Day' Speech Convinced Him Alien

When ET chatted with Smith leading up to Independence Day’s premiere, he recalled the first moment that convinced him the movie was destined to be a hit. Putting aside his own standout moments, as well as The White House explosion sequence that had been making waves since the movie’s Super Bowl spot, Smith instead cited He added, “Because [Pullman] just ripped that scene. Ripped it.” While Jurassic Park, Smith brought his own brand of comic-relief-amid-peril-energy to ID4 that went toe to toe with his co-star. Ultimately, that giftwould shine the brightest when Smith lacked a scene partner. Perhaps the most memorable example features his character, smart-mouthed fighter pilot Stephen Hiller, dragging an unconscious alien through the Nevada desert toward Area 51 following their aerial dogfight. When ET visited the set in 1995, Smith had already completed filming the solo tour-de-force, which was actually shot atUtah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Will Smith Shares Shirtless Photos and Says He’s in the ‘Worst Shape’ of His Life “I just think it would be arrogant of us to think that humankind is the only 'kind' that exists in the entire universe. How is that possible?” Smith said. He added, “But I'm a conspiracy junkie, though, so I believe all that stuff.” While speaking with ET in 1996, Smith recalledthe challenge of acting as if he was facing this type of doomsday scenario. 20th Century Studios To achieve this, Smith did find help in Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin, who Smith...

‘Independence Day’ gave us the greatest presidential speech in recent history

Welcome to , a semi-regular series in which Marine veteran and pop culture omnivore Decades ago, director Roland Emmerich and writer Dean Devlin gave American audiences one of the greatest summer blockbusters of the 1990s. Independence Day helped cement Will Smith’s tenure as a top action star of the decade, gave us another excuse to listen to Jeff Goldblum quip and stutter between raised eyebrows, and delivered a perfect mix of camp and gratuitous destruction at a time when we weren’t so queasy about seeing national monuments laid to waste on screen. The scene takes place at Area 51, where the survivors of the brutal alien invasion gather to mount a last-ditch offensive to deliver mankind from the threat of annihilation. When President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman), grabs the mic and addresses the beleaguered troops, he delivers the speech we’ve always wanted to hear from an actual president. In fact, if we were ever attacked by a war fleet of extraterrestrials, that scene would probably be required viewing for White House staff, “I wrote a book that was a collection of great presidential speeches, and if in fact the world had been invaded by aliens, this speech would have made the collection,” he “The main reason we did that is ’cause the studio at the time was threatening to change the title to Doomsday,” Devlin Not only did President Whitmore rally earth’s defenders for one final push against the alien menace, he also helped secure the film’s title, which is great,...
