Asia Cup 2023 set to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

The PCB's proposed hybrid model for the Asia Cup is likely to be approved by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Sri Lanka as the neutral venue where India can play their games. The model sees four - and possibly five - of the tournament's 13 games being played in Pakistan. All the India-Pakistan games will be played in Sri Lanka, as will the final if India is involved. The likely approval represents a significant breakthrough in an impasse which has not only dragged on for some time but has also threatened fallout for ICC events, most pressingly the World Cup in India this year but also the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. There is a possibility now that an agreement here could ease Pakistan's path to traveling to India for the World Cup. The PCB head Najam Sethi had presented details of the hybrid model to Pankaj Khimji, head of Oman Cricket and the ACC's vice-president, in a meeting in Dubai a couple of weeks ago. It was the solution the PCB had proposed to account for the fact that India will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament because of ongoing political tensions between the governments of the two countries. Those political ties have led to a long and cumbersome path to this solution - the PCB, as appointed hosts, have been keen to ensure that at least part of the tournament is played in Pakistan. The UAE was in the running as a neutral venue, and Sri Lanka was keen to host the entire tournament. At one stage the BCB and SLC A total of 13 matches, including...

Photograph: Babar Azam/Twitter The Asian Cricket Council headed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah could accept PCB chairman Najam Sethi's proposed Hybrid Model for conducting four non-India Asia Cup games in Pakistan while the rest of the matches will be played in Sri Lanka's Galle and Pallekele. The ACC is likely to make a formal announcement on Tuesday and once the Hybrid Model is officially accepted, decks will be cleared for Pakistan team's travel to India for the ODI World Cup scheduled in October-November, including playing in Ahmedabad. "Oman Cricket board chief Pankaj Khimji, one of the respected ACC executive board members, was entrusted to find a solution as most countries didn't want a Hybrid Model. But as of now four non-India games -- Pakistan vs Nepal, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh -- will be held at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore. The two India vs Pakistan games and all other Super Four Games will be held in either Pallekele or Galle," an ACC board member told PTI. The Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in September. It is understood that once ICC CEO Geoff Allardice and chairman Greg Barclay visited Karachi to meet Sethi, it was decided that Pakistan won't set any conditions to come for the World Cup, provided four games are held in the country as they have the hosting rights. Playing a tournament without Pakistan would...

Hardik, Jadeja shine in India’s five

India vs Pakistan HIGHLIGHTS, Asia Cup Super 4: PAK beats IND by 5 wickets, Rizwan, Nawaz star in chase Hardik Pandya, POTM: In bowling, it’s important to assess the situations and use your weapons. For me, bowling short and hard lengths have been my strengths. It’s about using them well and asking the right questions to make the batters commit a mistake. In a chase like this, you always plan over by over. I always knew that there is one young bowler and also one left-arm spinner. We only needed 7 off the last over but even if we needed 15, I’d have fancied myself. I know the bowler is under more pressure than me in the 20th over. I try to keep things simple. IND vs PAK: Hardik Pandya comes full circle - stars with bat and ball four years after injury against same opponent, in same tournament, at same venue Rohit Sharma: Halfway through the chase, we still knew that we can win irrespective of the situation. We had the belief and when you have that belief, these things can happen. It’s about giving clarity to the guys so that they know their roles well. It was a bit challenging but I’ll take wins like this anyday over usual victories. Yes, they (India’s pace bowling) have come a long way in the last year or so and they have adapted well to different situations. Since the time he (Hardik) has made his comeback, he’s been brilliant. When he was not part of the team, he figured what he needs to do to his body and his fitness regime, and now he is clocking 140+ easily. His batt...

Asia Cup: Najam Sethi Shuts Down Idea Of Ind vs Pak 2023 WC Game In Ahmedabad

There seems to be no end to tensions between India and Pakistan over the hosting rights of the 2023 Asia Cup, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) advocating a hybrid model. PCB chief Najam Sethi has rejected suggestions the India vs Pakistan match in the 2023 ODI World Cup take place at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. "I don’t want to go into the politics of it but certainly there seems to be a political angle to this because if there’s one city where we might have security issues, it’s Ahmedabad. And therefore, I think the less said about that, the better. It gave the impression that this was a red herring that was thrown in our way to tell us, ‘hey, we are going to play you in Ahmedabad and you watch out. You know who rules Ahmedabad," he added. "If India now wants to have a neutral venue and accepts the hybrid model, then we’ll use the same hybrid model in the World Cup. Pakistan can play its World Cup matches in Dhaka or any other venue to which India agrees, and similarly in the Champions Trophy. So all the other countries can come and play in Pakistan but India can play at a neutral venue. So this is a model that goes forward and resolves this political logjam," said Sethi.
