Apple iPhone 14 Pro review: A new perfect iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro is the sweet spot for the best of Apple’s iPhone technology. This 6.1-inch device isn’t too big, and its front has been transformed with the new Dynamic Island and an excellent always-on display. It maintains the performance lead or rivals with a faster and more efficient A16 Bionic chip, and the updated camera array should please all but the most demanding smartphone photogs. If, however, you need the biggest iPhone screen available, paired with the performance of this phone, you’ll want to go for the pricier 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. No doubt some of this feels like Apple playing catch-up, but we’re sure Apple doesn’t see it that way – and perhaps it shouldn’t. Apple brings features to its iPhone line when it feels they’re ready, and will best serve users. It’s worth noting that Apple doesn’t turn it to 11 on most of these features. We get more zoom options on the cameras, but not greater zoom range. We’ve got pixel binning, but at four pixels-per-large-pixel and not, say, nine, as you’d find on The iPhone 14 Pro is not, though, without fresh innovation. First, there’s the slightly risky decision to forgo SIM slots on all US iPhone 14 devices, and instead use We consider the new Dynamic Island to be the biggest innovation. It’s a clever way of retiring the TrueDepth module notch, introduced with iPhone X, while retaining most of the technology that’s made Face ID, selfies, and front-facing AR operations so effective. A combination of hardware and soft...

iPhone 14 Pro: a first look at the new moving notch, camera, and more

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max look very similar to last year’s 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max until you look more closely at the display. The new pill-shaped cutout means the notch is gone, kind of. It actually moves around and animates in what Apple calls the Dynamic Island. Notifications and alerts will adapt and move around the pill-shaped notch, and Apple is using this system for live activity widgets and even when you swipe up to move background tasks like music playback to the island. Also new to the displays on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is an always-on feature. It works by showing widgets of information on the display without it needing to be powered on. You can check out the weather, calendar information, and more. It looks great, and wallpapers even darken to match the always-on mode. This works with any wallpaper you use, and according to an Apple spokesperson, is optimized to highlight faces when one is detected. Also inside the iPhone 14 Pro models is Apple’s upgraded A16 Bionic chip. It’s hard to test the performance in the limited hands-on time we get with these devices, but Apple says it has focused on power efficiency, display, and camera with its new chip. This new chip also helps power the new Dynamic Island system. In a year packed with numerous phone releases, Apple's iPhone 14 lineup is curious. There is the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which represent the pinnacle of the company's design, software and hardware. The iPhone 14 Pro is notably defined by an oval-shaped screen cut-out for the True Depth camera, which replaces the notch, called the Dynamic Island. But then, there's the iPhone 14 which seems like a repackaged iPhone 13 Pro without the stainless steel body or the third rear camera for telephoto pictures. Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 Mini and replaced it with a bigger version of the 14 called the iPhone 14 Plus. Starting at $929, it's m...

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Review

Hands On With the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Lineup The iPhone 14 Pro measures 5.81 by 2.81 by 0.31 inches (HWD) and weighs 7.27 ounces—dimensions that are, for all intents and purposes, identical to the 13 Pro. It’s noticeably smaller and lighter than the 14 Pro Max (6.33 by 3.05 by 0.31, 8.47 ounces), and about even with the vanilla iPhone 14 (5.78 by 2.82 by 0.31 inches, 6.07 ounces). The most direct competitors in terms of price and features are the (Credit: Eric Zeman) Placement of physical controls and ports mirrors that of other iPhones, which means you’ve got a ringer switch and volume buttons on the left, a combined power/screen lock button on the right, and the dated Lightning port on the bottom. We’ll continue to bemoan Apple’s proprietary port until the company adopts the industry-favored USB-C port for charging and data transfer. (Credit: Eric Zeman) Apple drops the physical SIM tray for all US models of the iPhone 14 family, which instead rely on Though the phone’s dimensions are changed only minutely compared with the iPhone 13 Pro, the camera module is larger and thus you’ll need to scout out a A Fast, Fresh Screen The iPhone 14 Pro screen carries a few notable upgrades over the iPhone 13 Pro screen. It’s got slightly slimmer bezels and bumps the resolution from 2,532 by 1,170 pixels to 2,556 by 1,179 pixels, for a density of 460ppi. It carries over the 6.1-inch measurement and features such as HDR, Haptic Touch, and True Tone color. (Credit: Eric Zeman) Apple has...

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review

Hands On With the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Lineup The phone measures 6.33 by 3.05 by 0.31 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.47 ounces—dimensions that are within fractions of a millimeter and just 0.01 ounces changed from last year's model. That makes it a large and heavy device, but Pro Max buyers should be well used to these dimensions and weight by now. It's about on par with the While the design isn't particularly exciting, Apple continues to lead the market with materials and build quality. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a stainless steel frame (as opposed to the standard iPhone 14's aluminum) and is protected with the company's own Ceramic Shield. Apple says its Shield is stronger than competing glass, but that's not something we can test in a practical manner. Phones from Google and Samsung ship with Gorilla Glass Victus or Victus+, which is the top-of-the-line material from Corning. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same (Credit: Eric Zeman) The phone has the same flat side edges as the last two Pro Max models, with controls scattered around the frame. Flat-edged phones are less comfortable to hold than those with rounded frames, and that is certainly true of the iPhone 14 Pro Max—but dang that stainless steel feels good. The left side houses the ringer switch and separate volume toggles, while a combined power/screen lock button graces the right edge. The switch and buttons have superb travel and feedback. Apple's decade-old Lightning port is centered on the bottom edge of the phon...
