IPL Auction 2023: Intense bidding war ensued between the 10 teams of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to snatch the best from the talent pool for the next IPL season. Termed mini-IPL auction, teams jostled to grab their preferred players with the likes of Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Mayank Agarwal being among the most expensive buys. The overall player pool for the auction contained 405 players with a maximum of 87 slots to be filled, including 30 overseas players to be selected by the teams. The auction was held in Kochi. Initially, a total of 369 players were shortlisted by 10 teams from the initial list of 991 players. Thirty Six additional players were requested by teams, which are added into the final list which makes a total of 405 players which will be presented at the TATA IPL 2023 Auction. Out of 405 players, 273 are Indians and 132 are overseas players of which 4 players are from associate nations. The total capped players are 119, uncapped players are 282 and 4 from associate nations. A maximum of 87 slots are now available with up to 30 being slotted for overseas players. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Monday issued a list of international and domestic cricketers who will be up for auction in the five-team tournament, which will begin on July 31. Raina, 36, a solid striker of the ball at the top of the order, played every season of the IPL tournament between 2008 and 2021, barring 2020 when he returned to India from the UAE - where the IPL was held due to COVID-19. Raina has played 205 IPL matches and scored more than 5,500 runs, including an unbeaten century. The India cricketer played for CSK and Gujarat Lions in the IPL and represented Uttar Pradesh in domestic tournaments. As per the BCCIโ€™s rules, a player has to announce his retirement from all forms of competitive domestic cricket to play in franchise leagues in other countries.
