By Rohan Sen: Team India have qualified for the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final after beating England an innings and 25 runs in the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad on Saturday. India outclassed England with both the bat and ball inside 3 days to set up the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June. Resuming on their overnight score of 294 for 7, the hosts added another 71 runs on Day 3 thanks to Washington Sundar and Axar Patel's 8th-wicket partnership to post 365 in their first innings. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel picked up yet another five-wicket haul while Ravichandran Ashwin also grabbed 5 for Team India. India needed just a draw to reach the WTC final but a victory means they qualified for the summit clash in top spot with 490 points. India registered 12 wins from 17 Tests, lost 4 and drew just 1 Test in the competition. No other team came close to matching India's record. England had 11 wins from 21 Tests but still ended up in fourth place. New Zealand had already qualified for the WTC final with 420 points from 11 Tests with 7 wins and 4 losses. The current ICC World Test Championship period has come to an end, following the completion of the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka finally showed some fight on the fourth day in Wellington, but skipper Tim Southee (3/51) got the final breakthrough to ensure New Zealand clinched a comfortable innings and 58-run victory over Dimuth Karunaratne's side. New Zealand overcome Sri Lanka's resistance to take the Test series 2-0. The triumph helped New Zealand jump from eighth to sixth on the World Test Championship standings, with Pakistan and West Indies each dropping a place following the final Test of the period. There is of course still the World Test Championship final ahead, with Australia and India scheduled to do battle in the one-off Test at The Oval in London at the start of June after they finished in the top two positions on the standings. South Africa finish in third place and narrowly behind India in second, while England rise to third and in front of Sri Lanka following the Asian nation's 2-0 series loss to New Zealand.
