UFC 284 results, highlights: Islam Makhachev edges past Alexander Volkanovski to retain lightweight title

Alexander Volkanovski fell short in his pursuit of glory but made believers of his many naysayers. UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and featherweight champion Volkanovski fought back-and-forth for five hard rounds. Makhachev retained his title, but the outcome is sure to be debated for some time. Makhachev and Volkanovski masterfully weaponized each other's greatest strengths. Volkanovski managed to peel away Makhachev's grappling and confidence to wrestle offensively. But Makhachev mastered the range on the feet and countered Volkanovski well. All five rounds were competitive, but the momentum trended from Makhachev to Volkanovski with each passing five minutes. Makhachev, 31, ran his win streak to 12 with the victory as he continues to collect accolades along the way. "I showed why I am No. 1... You like it or you don't like it, I'm the number one best fighter in the world," Makhachev told UFC commentator Michael Bisping during the post-fight interview. "I want a real contender. Not fakes." Round 2 was a major swing round. Volkanovski appeared to have dropped the defending champion, but Makhachev immediately shot for and secured his second takedown of the fight. Later in the round, Makhachev hit Volkanovski with a big punch that put the challenger off-balance and sent him in retreat. Volkanovski wasn't always able to stuff the takedown attempt, but he regularly peeled off the notoriously sticky Makhachev and either broke free or pushed Makhachev against the fence...

UFC 284

UFC 284 delivered the goods on Saturday night in Australia. Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight title despite a valiant effort from featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Makhachev took home a unanimous decision in the main event from the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. Despite all three judges giving Makhachev the nod, Volkanovski impressed many in moving up to 155 pounds and giving the champion all he could handle. Meanwhile, Makhachev improved his win streak to 12 as he continues to dominate the fighters pitted against him. The undercard also saw Yair Rodriguez earn the interim featherweight crown with a second-round submission of Josh Emmett. Rodriguez will likely have a date with Volkanovski later this year. Plus, Jack Della Maddalena continues to impress as he scored another first-round stoppage with a submission of Randy Brown. Can't get enough boxing and MMA? UFC 280 results, highlights: Islam Makhachev submits Charles Oliveira to earn lightweight title

Islam Makhachev scored one of the biggest statement wins in recent MMA history at UFC 280, submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round to claim the vacant lightweight championship. Makhachev won every area of the fight from the opening bell, landing good shots on the feet and scoring an early takedown. Oliveira, the UFC's all-time leader in submission victories, threatened with a few submission attempts but did not manage to lock anything in due to Makhachev's superior positioning. Makhachev also landed a few punches in the opening frame that seemed to rock Oliveira. The same thing would happen in the second round, but this time Makhachev did not allow Oliveira to survive. After a right hand sent Oliveira to the canvas, Makhachev followed and quickly locked in an arm-triangle choke that forced Oliveira to tap out at the 3:16 mark of Round 2. "I just want to say, this is my belt for coach Abdulmanap," Makhachev said. "Many years ago, he told me to train hard and you're going to be champion. I always ask God why he always gives me more than what I ask. I knew this wouldn't be an easy fight. This guy always pushes." Can't get enough boxing and MMA?
