It Ends with Us Chapter 1 Summary & Analysis

Lily sits on the ledge of a twelve-story building’s roof. She doesn’t think about suicide, but she does consider death. Earlier that day she attended her father’s funeral and delivered a memorable eulogy before abruptly flying home. She suspects her mother won’t talk to her for the next year. Unlike eulogies that famous people give for beloved figures, Lily doesn’t believe that many people will remember her speech. Her father was well known in their community, however, as the mayor and an accomplished real estate agent in their town. That the novel opens with Lily sitting on the edge of a tall building, considering the idea of suicide, gives the novel an immediate sense of poignancy, if not danger. Her decision to find a high rooftop upon landing back in Boston symbolizes her desire for perspective on the day’s events. Lily’s father’s death and her botched eulogy have made her deeply consider her life, her past, and her relationships. Her thoughts on the matter are tinged with resentment; her mother appears easy to upset, and Lily’s seems to feel she is living in the shadow of her father’s reputation. Lily feels like an embarrassing misfit compared to her successful father. She imagines that people remember her as a girl with haphazard red hair who once, to her family’s shame, dated a homeless guy. Lily had been eager to leave town after the funeral, hopping on the earliest plane she could find back to her home in Boston. Upon landing, she went to the first tall building s...

It Ends With Us Colleen Hoover, 2016 Atria Books 384 pp. ISBN-13: 9781501110368 Summary Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most. Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his "no dating" rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened. With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love t...

It Ends with Us Epilogue Summary & Analysis

Eleven months later, Lily is pushing Emmy down the street on her way to Ryle’s. Three months after Ryle’s birth, Lily moved out of the apartment she and Ryle had lived in together. Now she lives walking distance from both work and the building where Ryle, Allysa, Marshall, and Rylee still live. She is happy that she is able to spend so much time there, too, and that Emmy gets to know her family. Lily is late meeting Ryle and quickens her pace. She is surprised when she hears someone call her name. Despite the anguish Lily experienced throughout the novel, the epilogue shows how her decision to love herself and her daughter first, hold Ryle accountable, and be vulnerable with the people she loves has paid off. Her chosen family is intact, her daughter is healthy, and she and Ryle are successfully co-parenting. Lily is well on her way to healing. When Lily sees blue eyes, she knows it’s Atlas. He is thrilled when he sees the baby. Atlas tells Lily how beautiful Emmy is and how good Lily looks, too. Lily assesses Atlas, noticing how handsome he’s become. Lily gets another text from Ryle. She explains to Atlas that it’s Ryle’s day to care for Emmy, and Atlas is relieved to hear that Lily and Ryle are no longer together. Atlas tells Lily that he’s late, too—he opened a new restaurant in the neighborhood. Lily promises to bring her mother to the restaurant soon, and then she and Atlas part ways. When Lily and Atlas run into each other on the sidewalk, their lives are completely ...

When Lily gets home, she sees that Ryle won’t be coming over that night because he wants to monitor his patients after a successful surgery. Lily settles down for a quiet evening. Lily wants so badly to move on from the past, but she feels the only way to do so is to confront is directly. Now that Atlas has re-entered her life, she is ready to remember how he left it all those years ago in hopes it will help her make sense of her present situation. Lily wrote to Ellen that her birthday was the best and then the worst day of her life. She was excited to see Atlas after months of missing him. When he crawled through her window, she could tell that he had put on weight and was in a better headspace than she had ever seen him. They talked for hours. Atlas told her that he had something to tell her. He explained that he had planned to kill himself the night he found the abandoned house. Before he could, he spotted her across the street in the window. He told Lily that she had saved his life, then he kissed the spot on her shoulder he favored. Li...

It Ends with Us Chapters One & Two Summary & Analysis

Part One Summary: Chapter One Lily Bloom, who buried her father twelve hours prior, sits on the ledge of a rooftop of a building she doesn’t live in, thinking about the stars and death. She’s on the roof to calm her nerves after giving an “epic” eulogy at her father’s funeral, and she’s enjoying the solitude when she’s interrupted by an angry man. The man throws the door to the roof open and starts violently kicking a patio chair that’s made of marine-grade polymer. The chair is impervious to his violence. When the man sees Lily, he asks her to get off the ledge, afraid she’s going to hurt herself. Lily is reluctant, but seeing his anxiety, she obliges, and once she’s on more solid ground, the two begin to talk. The man is Ryle Kincaid, who is studying to be a neurosurgeon, and whose sister owns the top floor of the building. Lily notices that Ryle is very attractive. She makes fun of her name—Lily Blossom Bloom—to Ryle, admitting that her name is all the more embarrassing and on-the-nose because she dreams of opening a flower shop someday. The two begin to tell each other “naked truths,” acknowledging that people aren’t honest with each other the majority of the time. Lily tells Ryle that her father was abusive to her mother her entire life. Ryle tells Lily that he just lost a patient, a little boy who was accidentally shot by his brother. Ryle is furious about the incident, blaming the parents for not securing the firearm, and he and Lily talk about how the life of the b...

Parents Need to Know Parents need to know that It Ends With Us is a contemporary romance by popular author Colleen Hoover, who has attracted a lot of attention from book influencers on TikTok. This adult book is not marketed to teens, there's a lot of teen appeal here, not just in the sexy stuff but also in the extended passages… a lot Breaking a familiar cycle is very difficult; it's much easier and less scary to stay in the cycle you know, even if you know it's not a good one. Instead of wondering why women stay in abusive relationships, we should wonder why men are abusive. Character isn't the mistakes you make, because everybody makes them; character is taking your mistakes and turning them into lessons, not excuses. There's no such thing as bad people; we're all just people who sometimes do bad things. • Positive Role Models Witnessing physical abuse throughout childhood is a strong theme. The narrator describes her father slapping, choking, attempting to rape, and knocking her mother to the floor. She also hears him beating a friend with a baseball bat and the sound of bones breaking. In the present the narrator is pushed down stairs, head butted, bitten, nearly raped, hit, and knocked down by her husband. Blood, pain, and fear are described without being gory. Mention of past suicidal thoughts and holding a razor to a wrist. A character reveals scars on the arms from receiving cigarette burns. Past instances of children accidentally shooting and killing a sibling. S...
