Uruguay beat Italy to win U20 World Cup

More than 40,000 people — including “This is crazy, crazy, crazy and we deserve it,” said a tearful Rodriguez said after the match. “We are living a dream.” Italy’s Cesare Casadei wins the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at the — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) Italy coach Carmine Nunziata credited Uruguay but also blamed the pitch. “The pitch has penalised any player who has more skills,” Nunziata said. “We had an incredible run. This match doesn’t cancel what we have done, playing all these matches is not easy. They were better than us today.” Uruguay, who lost the final in 1997 and 2013, had chances to go ahead much earlier as Rodriguez went close with a free-kick, captain A defence which conceded only three goals in the tournament — all against Earlier, debutant Israel beat

The Start of El Nino Has Officially Arrived, Says NOAA

It formed a month or two earlier than most El Ninos do, which “gives it room to grow,” and there’s a 56% chance it will be considered strong and a 25% chance it reaches supersized levels, said “If this El Nino tips into the largest class of events … it will be the shortest recurrence time in the historical record,” said Kim Cobb, a climate scientist at Brown University. Such a short gap between El Ninos leaves communities with less time to recover from damages to infrastructure, agriculture, and ecosystems like coral reefs. Usually, an El Nino mutes hurricane activity in the Atlantic, giving relief to coastal areas in states from Texas to New England, Central America and the Caribbean, weary from recent record busy years. But this time, forecasters don’t see that happening, because of record hot Atlantic temperatures that would counteract the El Nino winds that normally decapitate many storms. Hurricanes strengthen and grow when they travel over warm seawater, and the tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean are “exceptionally warm,” said Kristopher Karnauskas, associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. So this year, NOAA and others are predicting a near-average Atlantic hurricane season. In the past, a strong El Nino has led to record global warmth, like in 2016 and 1998. Scientists earlier this year had been saying next year is more likely to set a record heat, especially because El Ninos usually reach peak power in winter. But this El Nino started even ear...

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's former prime minister, has died at the age of 86 : NPR

Silvio Berlusconi meets journalists at the Quirinale presidential palace in Rome in 2018. Gregorio Borgia/AP ROME — Former Italian prime minister, and sitting senator in the Italian parliament, Silvio Berlusconi died at the age of 86, according to reports from Italian media on Monday. No cause of death was immediately available. He was hospitalized last week for planned medical checks related to his chronic leukemia. The media mogul served as Italy's prime minister multiple times beginning in 1994, and his flamboyant lifestyle left a mark on popular culture, while his abrasiveness, coarseness, populist style, and constant legal woes trashed political norms and tainted Italy's image in the world. A born showman, Berlusconi liked to brag that his career began as a crooner on cruise ships. He moved on to construction and real estate, and built an empire — television networks, newspapers, publishing houses, a top soccer team and much more. Empire-building It all started with a 1970s game show, when a caller's right answer prompted a housewife in the studio to strip a piece of clothing. "If someone had told me this was the beginning of a new empire, a huge media empire and a new political order, where the owner of the media empire also become the prime minister and this whole story would start with a striptease program, I would laugh," says Erik Gandini, director of Videocracy, a 2009 documentary about Italian television and its impact on the country's culture and politics. What is left to write about Italy? These days, there’s no question about whether or not a trip to the country is worthwhile—we sing its praises all the time, exalting the It’s a question without a simple answer. Certainly, there is no bad time to go. But several factors—weather, crowds, cultural events—are important to consider in order to make your bucket-list vacation all that it’s meant to be and more. First, consider your goals. Do you dream of seeing the storied sites of cosmopolitan To beat the heat and avoid the crowds, visit Italy's cities (like Rome, seen here) during the mild winter months. Alexander Spatari/Getty When is the best time to visit Italy? The seasons immediately pre- and post-high season (spring just before, and fall immediately after, summer) yield the highest dividends. “Late spring is the most magical time across most of Italy,” says Yuill, whose work focuses on the country’s northern regions—think Fitzroy prefers fall, when the countryside has enjoyed a robust season and is gratefully winding down its tourism trappings, while making the most of the season's best produce. She says: “It has to be autumn, especially early October, when it’s still warm enough to have a final dip in the sea, to eat lunch al fresco, and feast on the first of the season’s white truffles and the new olive oil. The colors of the landscape are at their best, with scorched fields returning to their vivid green.” By this time, the summer crowds have dispersed, she says, and ...
