On a day when thousands of Shiv Sainiks turned up at the memorial for Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park, opened to the public for the first time today on the late leader's first death anniversary, his estranged son Jaidev Thackeray said there is no need for a statue or memorial to be built at Shivaji Park.

Uddhav Thackeray's brother Jaidev, nephew share stage with Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde at Dussehra rally

Jaidev Thackeray, the elder brother of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, on Wednesday evening shared the stage with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the rebel faction's Dussehra rally at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Jaidev Thackeray's estranged wife Smita was also present at the MMRDA ground in BKC, the rally site in suburban Mumbai, along with Nihar, the son of late Bindumadhav Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray's eldest brother. A vacant chair used by Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray during his last rally in Thane, was placed at the centre of the stage. Champa Singh Thapa, a trusted aide of the late Bal Thackeray who served the Shiv Sena founder for 27 years, was also present at the event. Talking to reporters, Smita Thackeray said she was invited to the rally by Shinde, who heads the rebel faction of the Shiv Sena. Jaidev Thackeray is said to share an uneasy relationship with his younger brother Uddhav Thackeray. In his brief speech, Jaidev lauded the "courageous step" (of charting a new course) that Shinde has taken and urged the workers not to abandon him. The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction organised its own Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai. Both Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray claim their faction is the "real" Shiv Sena. Shinde's rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray's leadership had led to the collapse of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in June. The rise and rise of Rashmi Thackeray

In 1987, Rashmi Patankar, the second of three children from a middle class family from the Maharashtrian-dominated suburb Dombivli, Mumbai, joined the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) as a contractual employee. The graduate from Mulund's Vaze-Kelkar College and daughter of a small businessman wanted a job to be financially independent. At LIC, Rashmi found a friend in Jayjaywanti Thackeray, a colleague in the firm. This friendship would lead to her extraordinary rise in public life. Jayjaywanti, was the daughter of the late Shrikant Thackeray, the sister of Raj Thackeray, and Bal Thackeray's niece. Jayjaywanti introduced Rashmi to her cousin Uddhav, Thackeray's youngest son, who was an avid photographer and, at the time, ran a small advertising agency.Their friendship grew into relationship, and the couple was married on December 13, 1989. Over three decades later, on March 1, Rashmi replaced Uddhav Thackeray as the editor of the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna. The paper was founded by Bal Thackeray in 1982, who remained its editor until his death on November 17, 2012, when he was replaced by Uddhav. The paper is run by its executive editor Sanjay Raut. However, the editorials are mostly attributed to the editor. Rashmi's takeover could be a mere formality. The paper has not had an editor after Uddhav gave up the position after assuming charge of Maharashtra's chief minister on November 28, 2019 to avoid an office of profit controversy. But with Rashmi Thackeray, the...

Jaidev Thackeray Withdraws Case Challenging Father Bal Thackeray's Will

Mumbai: Jaidev Thackeray today withdrew his suit filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the will of his late father Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Mr Jaidev had challenged the will of December 13, 2011, in which the Sena patriarch had not left a farthing for his estranged son. The suit was filed after Bal Thackeray's death in November 2012. He disputed the will, saying his father was of "unsound mind" and that the Sena chief's other son, Uddhav Thackeray, had influenced him. Besides Mr Jaidev, the Sena patriarch had also not left anything for his third son, Bindumadhav Thackeray (who died in a road accident) or his family. In an affidavit filed Friday, Mr Jaidev said he wanted to close his suit opposing probate of the will in favour of Uddhav Thackeray and four other family members. He did not assign any reason for withdrawing his suit. Justice Gautam Patel, who has been hearing the suit, accepted the affidavit and directed the HC registry to issue by November 26 probate of the will in favour of Uddhav Thackeray and four other family members mentioned in the document. Bal Thackeray, in his will, had bequeathed a majority of his property to Uddhav Thackeray, who now heads the Shiv Sena, and his immediate family members. As per the will, except for the first floor of the three storey 'Matoshree' bungalow in suburban Bandra owned by Bal Thackeray, all his properties have been bequeathed only to Uddhav Thackeray and his immediate family members. The first floor of the fa...

Smita Thackeray, accompanied by her son Nihar, was the first to arrive at the venue. A while later, Uddhav's elder brother and Smita's estranged husband Jaidev Thackeray too arrived and was taken directly on stage and made to sit next to Shinde. I am not someone who can be tied to any group. I have like the 4-5 issues that have been taken up by Eknath, and hence I have come here. He is very hardworking, like the farmer. In Sena Saga, Uddhav Thackeray's Brother Pledges Support To Eknath Shinde

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's claim over being leader of the real Shiv Sena suffered yet another blow on Wednesday when his brother Jaidev Thackeray said "his full support" was with rival Eknath Shinde. "For the last 5-6 days, I have been asked whether you are in Shinde faction. Thackerays can't be in any faction. I like the steps taken by Shinde's side and out of love, I have come here," he said, speaking at the Dussehra event organised by Team Shinde. "Don't let Eknath be alone. You all should support him. Shinde is working for poor and for farmers. Shinde is similar to our farmers; he is very hardworking," Jaidev Thackeray said. "I will say, let Shinde Rajya come back. Let there be elections and let Shinde Rajya come back. My full support is with Eknath Shinde," he added. Since orchestrating the coup that usurped Uddhav Thackeray as Chief Minister in June and eventually replacing him with the support of most MLAs of the Shiv Sena, Mr Shinde has ramped up his claim on the legacy of the party's founder Bal Thackeray. For Dussehra, the two factions, eyeball-to-eyeball since the split, organised what was billed as a show of strength: two separate rallies in Mumbai, a first since the Shiv Sena's inception 56 years ago. While the Uddhav Thackeray faction won the legal battle to hold its rally at the historic Shivaji Park in Dadar in central Mumbai, a venue associated with the Shiv Sena since it was founded, the rebel group led by Mr Shinde organ...
