By T. Tuhinanshu Almost all Indian musical instruments can be traced to some form of ancient 1, it has international links with Gongs and Gamelan of Burma, Java, Sumatra being played in a similar fashion. On the Borobudur stupa musical cups are depicted. Music is played on such cups in Buddhist temples of Japan and in Kabuki theater. The essence of Jal-tarang remains Indian as hindustani notes emanate through bowls from China played upon with Japanese bamboo sticks. Inspired by Jaltarang, glass music became popular in sixteenth century Europe using glasses in place of cups. A curious variant of the Jaltarang is found in Jaisalmer district. A single metal plate -- called thali or tasli -- used for accompaniment by varying strokes to produce different tones and rhythms, is filled with water and is called Jaltaal. Although in prevalence for over five centuries now, the instrument drew quite a few enthusiasts in the first half of twentieth century. All India Radio incorporated a position of staff artiste in Jal-Tarang. The instrument was extensively used in film music and orchestral compositions. However, due to its design and delicate build coupled with lack of ease in playing more complex Raga-s, very few artistes adopted it as their main instrument for classical performances. The famous film director O.P. Nayyar narrated the sad decline of this instrument in a television interview. Visiting one of the musicians of his troupe who used to play jal-tarang, Nayyar inquired wheth...

It consists of multiple open pots of water of various sizes which when stuck at the edges produce sound. The principle behind the working is that striking the edge of the pot produces a vibration in it which travels through the water making it vibrate as well. This vibration when transferred to surrounding air produces a sweet sound. The speed of vibration depends upon the intensity with which the vessel was struck and thus determines the pitch of sound produced.

Jal Tarang: How Well Does It Irrigate The Classical Music Scenario?

The musicality of an instrument being completely dependent on the quantity of water it holds may sound a bit weird, but then it is one basic principle that makes the jalatarangam a distinct presence on India’s cultural map. Arranged almost in the shape of a semicircle before the performer, it forms a set of roughly one-and-a-half dozen porcelain bowls containing that colourless H 2O liquid, which is actually a common substance covering 71 per cent of the earth’s surface. Each of the bowls, varied in size though not exactly in shape, is filled with a certain levels of water so as to fix their pitch that finds expression when struck with a pair of wooden sticks. Typically lined up with pots of decreasing sizes from left to right, the instrument produces jingles that lend the music an oriental charm. Obviously, the bigger bowls generate notes of the lower octave, while smaller ones are for the higher registers. The assembly can sometimes be U-shaped and, in an odd case, the containers can be made of a metal (like aluminium or brass). With all its systemic limitations, this ‘bowl music’ has for long made its mark in Indian classical music. Known as jal tarang in the Hindustani system, the instrument has its equally minuscule number of practitioners down the country in the Carnatic stream too. The relatively speedier nature of the southern music perhaps lends itself to the jalatarangam kinetics in a way better than it finds positioned upcountry. That is because Carnatic music i...
