NBA rumors: James Harden currently 'torn' between 76ers, Rockets in free agency

As a free agent, "We can't have those discussions yet, but we are interested in bringing him back," Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said of Harden after Philadelphia's season came to an end last month. Harden has a player option for next season that he must turn down to become an unrestricted free agent, and he is widely expected to do so. Harden, 33, has maintained that he wants to play for a team that gives him a chance to compete for a championship at this later stage in his career. Through that lens, the Sixers seem like the better option, as the Rockets have a very young rotation and are probably a couple years away from true contention in the Western Conference, barring a major roster overhaul. The Sixers are in a tough spot with Harden, who is fresh off another playoff flameout. Signing him to a long-term, big-money deal could be a mistake, as he has already lost a step, and he has yet to show that he can get it done when it matters most. But he was solid for the Sixers as a primary facilitator throughout the season, and the team would have a tough time replacing his production if he were to sign elsewhere. With the reigning MVP in Last summer when Harden took a pay cut in order to help the Sixers build out the roster and signed a two-year deal with a player option, we knew we were going to be here, and now here we are. It will be interesting to see exactly how Harden's free agency shakes out as his decision will have a major impact on both the...

Doc Rivers opens up on Joel Embiid, James Harden, Sixers after firing

The Philadelphia 76ers moved on from Doc Rivers after three seasons on the job due to his inability to guide the Sixers past the second round of the playoffs. Philadelphia fell in the Eastern Conference semifinals in all three seasons under his guidance. There were some good things the Sixers accomplished under Rivers. They went 154-82 during his tenure, and the Sixers were the No. 1 seed in 2021 for the first time since 2001. They had bad luck in terms of injuries to Joel Embiid, and James Harden was not the same scorer he once was. Rivers hopped on No. 1, he has to be healthy. In the playoffs and this was the healthiest, but he still wasn’t 100%. Then No. 2 for Jo, is he’s got to make all his players better in the playoffs and Jo, his numbers are unfair, because he’s really — if you look at his numbers in the last three years in the playoffs, compared to his regular season numbers, they’re not very good. But a lot of that is due — the first year I had him he hurts his knee. The next year, he hits his face and tears ligaments in his hand, and then this year he has a knee injury and he was never the same once he came back this year. So health is No. 1. Then the second thing is Jo and he has the ability, I stayed on him daily. He has the ability to make his teammates better and when he does it, if you look at our games this year when he did that and dominated, hard to go away from Joel Embiid. It really is. He’s just got to do that on a consistent basis. Not just on the cou...
