JBL Tune Flex Review

What’s in the Box? JBL Tune Flex Earbuds Charging case USB-C charging cable 3 sizes of silicone tips Look and Feel When you first take the Tune Flex out of the box (they come in black or white), they seem to closely approximate the original, universal fit, Apple AirPods, without any silicone tip. In fact, wearing them with the extra small, “open ear tip” (which you can hardly notice) was most notably comfortable for me. Once I fitted the earbuds with the more traditional ear tips, the seal became more snug but also felt a touch more obtrusive. However, overall, I had no problems with respect to comfort, and it’s nice to have the option of an open or sealed fit. The Tune Flex is dressed in a small, cute case, again, about the general size of the AirPods. The earbuds themselves are also sleek and compact. They are smaller and more elegant than JBL’s other models, and it’s clear that the brand had aesthetics and portability in mind when creating this particular design. Design and Functionality Controls Both earbuds have touch sensors that allow you to control a bunch of functions, such as switching through ambient and ANC mode, track skipping, play/pause, as well as call and voice-assistant control. You’ll also find additional touch controls on the accompanying app. It should be noted, however, that you can’t adjust volume on the earbuds themselves. So, you’ll have to control loudness from your mobile device. Battery The Tune Flex delivers 6 hours of play with an additional 1...

JBL Tune Flex are wireless earbuds that let you fine

Now, a new pair gives you the choice of either letting sound in, or blocking it out with a physical barrier. These new wireless earbuds are called the JBL Tune Flex, and by default, they have an open design. But pop on the ear sealing tips, and they become a noise-isolating pair. They're essentially two pairs of buds in one. That means you can wear them in the open style when out for a run so you can hear traffic and other hazards, then when you need to focus, stick on the ear sealing tips and block out unwanted noise. We'd expect to hear a difference in audio quality, too, with open-backed earphones - certainly larger, over-ear headphones at least - tending to sound better than closed-back cans. They're rated IPX4 splash-resistant, work with Google Assistant for hands-free controls and come in three colourways, plus three 'Ghost' special edition finishes. Look out for them from September for £89.99 (about $108, AU$160). JBL Tune Flex review: earbuds that you can wear two ways

(Image credit: Future) Not everyone likes the idea of putting a pair of earbuds right inside their ear canal, even if that does mean better sound and better noise isolation - that’s why JBL has the Tune Flex buds, a pair of earphones that can rest in the outer part of your ear instead of deep inside them. I tested out the Ghost Edition of these earphones, which have a transparent design for both the charging case and earbuds. They look really cool, and they’re something a little different which I really liked. You can choose to pick them up in either black, white or purple. Or, if you prefer the standard version, you can buy them in a non-transparent blue, white or black. In terms of comfort, I found I could wear these for longer periods of time than in-ear earbuds but in terms of fit, they were much less secure and felt as though they could fall out if I moved too suddenly or if I jumped around. The stem design means they still balance well in your ears for the most part, but for those times when you do want added security or better sound, they do actually come with three sizes of sealing ear tips as well housed in a handy little case to keep them safe. (Image credit: Future) You’ll be able to use these in a fair amount of different scenarios, particularly because of the IPX4 water resistance which means they’ll survive splashes of rain or sweat, even though they won’t cope with being thrown in a pool of water. Each stem has its own touch controls that work very well with...

JBL Tune Flex review: Talented transformable earbuds

The JBL Tune Flex are proof, if it was ever needed, that the true wireless earbuds market never sits still. More than six years on from Apple’s arrival on the true wireless scene, we’re still seeing a dizzying release schedule and all manner of interesting innovations. JBL has been among the most active manufacturers over recent years, producing earbuds catering to a wide range of users at price points that are relatively easy on the wallet. Its latest buds, the JBL Tune Flex, hold true to this idea but have a novel twist up their sleeve: the ability to be used as both open-fit buds and buds that seal off your ear canals. It's a clever idea and one that helps set the Tune Flex apart from their numerous competitors, but do they fare well enough in other areas to be worthy of your attention? Read on to find out. JBL Tune Flex review: What do you get for the money? The JBL Tune Flex were priced at £90 at the time of writing, making them more expensive than all of the options on our Having a unique selling point is always helpful in a crowded market, and the Tune Flex have an unusual and rather useful one. Unlike most true wireless earbuds, which either use an open-ear design or have silicone tips to seal off your ear canals, the Tune Flex cover both bases. By default, they’re of the open-ear variety and allow a certain amount of external sound in to help increase your environmental awareness. However, by attaching one of the pairs of included eartips, you can transform them i...
