At least seven persons died and 19 others were seriously injured after a speeding coal-laden truck hit a bus on Odisha's Jharsuguda-Sambalpur Biju Expressway near the Rourkela Bypass on Friday. "The accident in Odisha's Jharsuguda is saddening. My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives in the accident. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest," a tweet from Prime Minister's Office read. As per information, the coal-laden truck collided with the bus head-on near Power House Chhak on the Jharsuguda bypass road. The bus was carrying employees from the JSW plant to Jharsuguda town. The deceased were returning after completing work in the plant when the mishap took place. The injured persons were shifted to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla of Sambalpur. Migrant worker on way home dies in bus in Odisha’s Jharsuguda; 40 others injured in accident

A 60-year-old migrant worker, who was returning home to Odisha’s Ganjam district from Gujarat in a bus, died while travelling and 40 others were injured in a separate incident in the state, officials said on Thursday. Of the 1,105 cases in Odisha, more than 1,000 have been reported in migrant workers who have returned from other states.(Ajay Aggarwal /HT Photo) Officials said Bhaskar Nahak of Aska in Ganjam was aboard a bus carrying migrant workers when he felt uneasy. His co-passengers found him dead as the bus was nearing Lakhanpur on National Highway-49 in Jharsuguda district late on Wednesday evening. Officials of the Jharsuguda district administration stopped the bus at Jharsuguda town and sent the body for an autopsy. In another incident, 40 migrant workers suffered injuries after a bus carrying them overturned on NH-60 near Laxmannath Toll Plaza in Jaleswar area of Balasore district early on Thursday. The workers were travelling from Kerala to West Bengal’s Kolkata in a bus when the driver lost control over the wheels due to darkness. Odisha’s tally of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) rose to 1,105 with the reporting of 42 new cases. Of the 1,105 cases, more than 1,000 have been reported in migrant workers who have returned from other states. An 85-year-old man, who had returned from Gujarat’s Surat, died in a quarantine centre in Ganjam district on Thursday taking the death toll to seven.

10 Injured In Bus

Jharsuguda: At least 10 people were injured, some of them seriously, in a head-on collision between a bus and truck in Lakhanpur area of Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Wednesday. Sources said the incident took place near Junion Chhak under the jurisdiction of Lakhanpur police station when the passenger bus was proceeding towards Jharsuguda from Raigarh in Chhattisgarh and the truck moving in the opposite direction. The locals rescued the injured persons and rushed them to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Lakhanpur. Drivers of both the vehicles have also sustained injuries in the mishap. Some of them with critical injuries were later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jharsuguda. A team of police personnel rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.

According to sources, the incident took place when the bus was ferrying around 35 workers from a factory in Sambalpur to Jharsuguda in the evening. The coal-laden truck collided with the bus head on near an eatery (Nikhil Dhabba) on the expressway, leaving three passengers dead at the spot. The injured have been rushed to Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital. The condition of at least 10 passengers is stated to be critical.
