Synopsis Reliance Jio has launched a new base FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) plan offering premium bundled entertainment options in a bid to disrupt Bharti Airtel's broadband and DTH (direct to home) TV businesses, with analysts predicting it could trigger a wave of pay TV market disruption. The most affordable home broadband plan, which starts at Rs 198 ($2.69) a month is aimed at acquiring new users from peers and putting pressure on Bharti Airtel by undercutting competitors. This, it said, is since Jio’s Rs 198 a month base home broadband plan is much below BofA Securities said Jio is looking to replicate its mobile strategy of facilitating transition at very low cost. “In the mobile market, users first started using Jio as a secondary SIM and over time, many switched to Jio given better speeds/pricing…we think Jio is expecting a similar outcome as it’s aggressive broadband plan aims to target competitors.” Earlier this month, Airtel had fortified its family postpaid offerings to counter Jio and ring fence its high-value postpaid user base. JioFiber 198 Back-Up Plan Reliance Jio has launched a new broadband plan called the JioFiber Backup, aimed at users who need a backup internet connection and also in rural areas where 24 x 7 connections are needed. The new plan will provide its users with unlimited data at a speed of 10 Mbps along with free landline calls. Users will also be able to increase their connection speed with instant activation as per their requirements. Connection speed can be increased to 30 Mbps for Rs. 21, Rs. 31, and Rs. 101 for 1 day, 2 days, and 7 days respectively.
