Ingrid Vasquez is a Digital News Writer at PEOPLE. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor in Journalism. Before joining the team, she worked as an Editor at FanSided and provided work in the celebrity and lifestyle space for brands that include Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, EW, and more. Speaking about her role as Tessa Ensler, Comer expressed that Ensler has been her "greatest teacher" and thanked playwright Susie Miller for writing the "magnificent piece." While taking the stage to accept the award, Comer was visibly emotional as she also thanked the play's producers and crew members and expressed: "This has been my greatest honor, and it continues to be these three weeks left." "I realized that I was quite fearful last year of a lot of things, especially in my ability to do this. And I think that actually, through this experience, I've been able to transform that into a sense of trust, which is a really nice feeling," added Comer. "That's not to say I don't have my moments, but I just feel like I have a clearer sense of who I am." Multiple outlets reported that the actress cited difficulty breathing during New York City's Varietyreported that Comer told the audience she couldn't breathe before a stage manager ushered her off the stage, and a spokesperson for the production told PEOPLE that an understudy took Comer's place for the remainder of the matinee performance. Jodie Comer poses in the press room during The 76th Annual Tony Awards. Cindy Ord/Getty Images for Tony Awards Pro It's safe to say that picking up the Tony for best lead actress in a play is not a case of beginner's luck. Who is she? The 30-year-old British actress who hails from Liverpool is best known for her performances on screen, starring in shows like Killing Eve, My Mad Fat Diary, and movies like Free Guy and The Last Duel. • She's best known for her role in Killing Eve, where she plays a deadly assassin named Villanelle. • In April, she took to Broadway to perform the lead role in Suzie Miller's critically acclaimed drama, Prima Facie. This was after a stint in London last year, performing the same role. What's the big deal? Comer's one-woman depiction of Tessa, a lawyer defending men accused of sexual assault, was her first ever performance on a professional stage. • The story follows Tessa, highly successful in her field and defense of her clients, as she herself becomes a victim of sexual assault. • Comer received high praise all around, for a performance that critics • Plus, competition was fierce this year, as Comer was up against Jessica Chastain in her much-buzzed-about performance in A Doll's House, as well as other seasoned actors like Jessica Hecht and Audra McDonald. It was definitely a challenge. But it was also incredible. I think it really fed into this fact that Tessa was in control of every element of this storytelling. And that was what really str...

Jodie Comer on how 'Killing Eve' has changed her life : NPR

SACHA PFEIFFER, HOST: In BBC America's hit drama "Killing Eve," Jodie Comer was chosen from dozens of actresses to play the deadly assassin Villanelle. The show also stars Sandra Oh and just kicked off its final season this week. NPR's TV critic Eric Deggans caught up with Comer to talk about her character and the lessons she'll take away as the series concludes. ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: Ask Jodie Comer to sum up "Killing Eve's" story for new viewers as the series returns for its fourth and final season, and she offers an answer crafted particularly for the streaming age. They should watch the show themselves from Season 1. JODIE COMER: The kind of premise of Season 1 was that it is this cat-and-mouse chase between these two women, the unraveling and the discovery of the female psyche through two women who are really fascinated and obsessed with each other. DEGGANS: It's been almost two years since audiences have last seen Comer's assassin Villanelle face off against Sandra Oh's put-upon former MI5 agent Eve Polastri. Polastri was an overlooked American employee of British intelligence obsessed with the idea that a mysterious female assassin was killing targets across the world. But as the final season begins, the roles have shifted. Villanelle has joined a religious group, living with a pastor and his daughter, trying hard to convince the world she can be a better person, starting with convincing the pastor to baptize her. Jodie Comer plays a barrister who defends people who have been accused of sexual assault in Prima Facie Actress Jodie Comer abruptly walked off stage during a Broadway performance on Wednesday after saying she had trouble breathing due to wildfire smoke. Comer's one-woman show, Prima Facie, continued after her understudy stepped in to complete the matinee performance. Canada wildfire smoke has blanketed New York City in recent days. A performance of Hamilton and several sports matches were postponed on Wednesday as residents were advised to stay indoors or wear N95 masks outside. "Today's matinee of Prima Facie was halted approximately 10 minutes into the performance after Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to the poor air quality in New York City because of smoke from the Canadian wildfires," a spokesperson for the production told The Hollywood Reporter. Understudy Dani Arlington replaced the Killing Eve star in the role of Tessa, completing the roughly 100-minute performance and earning an enthusiastic applause, a witness told Deadline. • • The audience member told Deadline that after about three minutes into her performance, Comer coughed and called out to a stage manager: "I can't breathe this air". Reports on social media and in Variety indicated Comer was helped off the stage by a member of the production team. By the time the announcement was made that the actress would not return to the stage that afternoon, some members of the audience had reportedly left th...
