Joe Root seeks England series win to leave ‘very difficult’ winter behind

O ne final Test match of the winter for England swept a broom through the squad before this tour, dropping two champions in the process, and have endlessly talked up collaboration and progress during the two stalemates in Antigua and Barbados, but their winter remains winless to date. With no full-time managing director or head coach as yet – Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood are only the respective interims – the true blueprint for this side is yet to reveal itself. Read more As such, and for all the runs the batters have finally harvested from the two sleepy surfaces thus far, everyone in the setup – players and support staff – could do with a performance and, ideally, the newly minted Richards-Botham trophy heading to Lord’s next week. Even Root, the great survivor of the Ashes recriminations, has no certainty whether he will remain as captain when regime change occurs, even if his desire to do so remains undimmed. “I don’t think it puts any pressure on me,” Root said when asked about this. “I think I’m the right man to take the team forward. [But] if the head coach comes in and thinks differently, that’s fine, that’s his decision. While I’m in this position, I’ll do everything to make this team as good as I possibly can. “The thing that is in my control, is helping this team put in a really strong performance and win this series, which would be a phenomenal achievement; not many teams have done it,” the England captain added. “Off the back of a very difficult winter,...

Joe Root steps down as England Test captain following West Indies defeat

The 31-year-old was appointed Sir Alastair Cook's successor in 2017, and holds the record for the highest number of matches and wins as captain. But his last series as skipper ended in defeat by West Indies, the 10-wicket third Test loss stretching England's winless run to nine matches. Root initially said he wanted to stay on but now says "the timing is right". "It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career - but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me, I know the timing is right," said Root, who has not stepped down as an England player. "I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride. "It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket. "I have loved leading my country, but recently it's hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me away from the game." Root's tally of 5,295 runs as captain is the most by any England captain, and he scored 14 centuries while holding the position. England's second-highest Test run scorer of all time, he led his country in a record 64 Tests and has overseen the most wins (27) but also the most defeats (26). His notable series losses include two 4-0 Ashes defeats in Australia, in 2017-18 and 2021-22. "I am excited to continue representing the Three Lions and producing performances that will enable the team to succeed," Root added. "...

Joe Root keen for Ashes without captaincy as he looks to improve record against Australia

• Moeen Ali considering Test comeback after England Ashes call • Pope 'confident' he is up to Ashes captaincy challenge if required • Rehan Ahmed, Will Jacks... Moeen Ali? Who are the candidates to replace Jack Leach? • Australia have fewer questions to answer than England in the Ashes • Stokes 'definitely on course' to bowl in first Ashes Test The last 12 months have been a combination of relief and re-discovery for the 32-year-old. Physically and emotionally shot by the time he stepped down as captain in April of last year - as much down to marshalling England through a pandemic as a final run of just one win in 17, including a 4-0 loss in Australia - Root began life under Stokes and Brendon McCullum with the enthusiasm of a man set free. In the first four matches of the new era, he struck three centuries - two against New Zealand and one against India. While merely an extension of long-held form having come into the summer with eight hundreds since the start of 2021, there was a return to the impishness of old which had seemingly been lost. Nothing typified that more than adding a front-on lap sweep over the slips to an otherwise traditional batting repertoire. "For where I am in my career, am I going to learn more about myself in that environment? Am I really going to be prepared better for an Ashes series facing lower-pace bowling on some nibbly wickets, when hopefully we will play on good pitches against high pace and a high-quality spinner? I don't think so. "By goi...

Joe Root quietly reaches milestone on his return to the middle

I n a batting performance as dominant as England’s against Ireland at Lord’s, and in a team devouring various scoring records, one milestone slightly slipped under the radar. On day two, as The relative value of runs versus wickets is perhaps why such staging posts often differ by way of fanfare. If Jimmy Anderson adds 15 more to his 685 Test pelts this summer – or perhaps even overtakes Shane Warne’s 708 – expect a fair amount of bunting to come out. But it is still worth noting Root’s rarified company, with Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 15,921 at the summit and Allan Border, in 10th place on 11,174, an Australian great who could well be overtaken during this upcoming Ashes series. Read more Aged 32 and with 11,004 runs, Root is young enough for a crack at Alastair Cook’s England record of 12,472 (fifth place overall), and possibly the very top. But he is also shrewd enough not to lob any grenades before taking on the Aussies. Ollie Robinson has spoken of dishing out “a good hiding”, and Stuart Broad has had his red pen out, but Root was keeping his cool after the Instead, Root’s advice to the likes of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook is not to “over-egg” their first taste of Ashes cricket; to know that the spotlight will be brightest, that national interest will swell in a way that trumps all other cricket, but also very little changes in the moment. “It’s the same game,” he said. “As soon as the bowler lets go of it, it’s you against the ball. Just go and play as you’ve been p...
