Josh Tongue: Meet England's new bowler who had Botox injections to save career

Josh Tongue had never been to Lord's as a player before joining up with the England squad on Monday England v Ireland Venue: Lord's Dates: 1-4 June Coverage: Live text commentary and in-play video clips on the BBC Sport website & app, plus BBC Test Match Special on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra. Daily Today at the Test highlights on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer from 19:00 BST. In the end, all it required was a little Botox. And for Josh Tongue, 15 months of pain, of sleepless nights, of being unable to pick up a cup of tea, fizzled away. There had been specialist after specialist and then, finally, the specialist. The one that suggested a cosmetic injection might relieve the nerve pressure in Tongue's shoulder and enable him to charge in, ball in hand once more. And now on the eve of England's Test summer, Tongue is hours away from being awarded cap number 711. It has been a whirlwind week for Tongue, which started when he answered a dawn call from a New Zealand number he did not recognise. According to Phil Weston, Tongue's agent, hearing Brendon McCullum on the other end of the phone "took his breath away". He could not believe it. But it was real. And after just two training sessions, McCullum determined Tongue to be Test ready, naming him in the starting XI to face Ireland in a one-off Test match that begins on Thursday at Lord's. • Tongue England Test debut to earn punter £50,000 • 'Unless I can't walk, I'll be on the field' - Stokes • Quiz: How well do you remem...

Josh Tongue to make England Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s

Josh Tongue has been parachuted into the England team for the first Test of the summer against Ireland starting on Thursday, with the Worcestershire seamer set to make his debut after edging Mark Wood and Chris Woakes out of the side. England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, described Tongue as “a big strong lad” who “bowls quite fast and has some real skills” after watching him in action during the team’s first training session of the summer on Monday. After their second, McCullum broke the news to Tongue that he would play against Ireland. Read more “I bowled at some of the lads on Monday,” Tongue said. “I felt like I bowled nicely and obviously I was going in with no expectations to be playing at all, and just bowling at high-class players in the nets was good for me. I must have bowled fairly well to get selected. “Baz came up to me just before training finished [on Tuesday] and gave me the good news. It’s an amazing feeling, a dream come true really.” Neither Wood nor Woakes are injured, though the former’s participation was in doubt as England sought to manage the workload of their one remaining bowler of express pace before the Ashes, which starts at Edgbaston on 16 June. Olly Stone, who might have provided a fast-bowling option, has been Tongue has his own experience with serious injury having spent 15 months with thoracic outlet syndrome, the compression of nerves in the shoulder, during which he considered retiring from the game altogether. “I’m just proud of myse...

Josh Tongue Profile

An outstanding debut season in 2017 saw Josh Tongue, then aged just 19, announce himself as one of the outstanding fast bowling prospects in English cricket. Six years later, he duly made his Test debut against Ireland at Lord's, after arriving in the squad as injury cover ahead of the Ashes, and impressing coach Brendon McCullum with his pace, bounce and attitude. It hadn't been a simple route from A to B, however. One year earlier, Tongue had been midway through a 15-month lay-off that he feared might end his career before it had started. A nerve problem in his right shoulder, called thoracic outlet syndrome, required two surgeries and botox injections to rectify, and left him in a "really dark place". But a successful winter with England Lions in Sri Lanka placed him back on the radar, and paved the way for his call-up. In that debut season in 2017, Tongue not only played a huge role in Worcestershire's promotion, but made his England U19 Test debut and won a place in the England Lions squad to Australia. After taking a five-wicket haul on Championship debut against Glamorgan at the start of April (he had previously played one first-class game against Oxford MCCU in 2016), he kept his place for the entire campaign and finished with 47 Championship wickets. Central to that success was his sharp pace and bounce generated from a high, easy action. With a cricket coach for a father, Tongue first represented the Worcestershire U10 side when he was aged just six and progresse...

Josh Tongue to make England debut after battling back from injury hell which left him considering retirement

Josh Tongue to make England debut after battling back from injury hell which left him considering retirement Josh Tongue contemplated retirement amid 15-month injury nightmare but will now make England debut at Lord's; Ben Stokes backs Worcestershire seamer to bring "x-factor" against Ireland - watch the one-off Test live on Sky Sports Cricket from 11am, Thursday Josh Tongue probably didn't expect to be on the brink of an England Test debut at Lord's. Certainly not during a 15-month shoulder-injury lay-off between 2021 and 2022 during which he contemplated retirement, and perhaps not even after being a late addition to the squad to face Ireland from Thursday following issues for James Anderson (groin) and Ollie Robinson (ankle). The Worcestershire bowler will now become the first from his county to debut for the England men's Test team since Moeen Ali in 2014. "It's an amazing feeling," said Tongue, whose 162 wickets in 42 first-class games have come at an average 26.04. "I'm speechless really, even from when I got the first call up to be in the squad.
