Two foster daughters of the Chief Justice of India, Justice D Y Chandrachud accompanied their father to the court and were given a tour of the court premises including court number one where the CJI presides over the bench, CJI’s chamber by their father himself. Everybody, judges, lawyers, and the court staff, was in for a big surprise when Justice Chandrachud reached the court at 10:00 am along with his two daughters – Mahi and Priyanka. The CJI explained to his daughters as to how the court functions – where judges sit and the point from where lawyers argue the matters. Both Mahi and Priyanka have disabilities. In a departure from every day routine, Chief Justice Chandrachud entered the courtroom along with his daughters from the main door of the court room number one adjoining the public gallery on either side. The then took his daughters to his chamber to show his office. What made a day for all those who witnessed the entire sequence is the love of a doting father who is otherwise a workaholic but still as in his judicial pronouncements strikes a balance between work and as a family man. CJI Chandrachud brought his daughters to the Supreme Court after one of them expressed the desire to see the Supreme Court.

Justice Chandrachud entered the courtroom through the public gallery with his two foster daughters and gave them a tour of the courtroom and his chamber. Justice Chandrachud entered the court premises at 10 am and showed them the courtroom and other places along with his chamber. He further explained his daughters, his job, and what exactly he does in the office. The Chief Justice showed his daughters - Mahi (16) and Priyanka (20) - where the court proceeding happens. He then took both of them to the CJI Court in Room No. 1 and showed them how the court functions. NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Friday came to the Supreme Court with his two foster daughters for a quick tour of his the courtroom and chamber. At around 10 am, the CJI brought the two foster daughters Mahi (16) and Priyanka (20), who are differently-abled, to the courtroom, from public gallery. He escorted them on a tour of the SC premises. In his courtroom, He was heard as telling them, “See, that’s where I sit.” Justice Chandrachud also showed the place where lawyers stood up and argue their cases. As the words spread, senior advocate and noted jurist Indira Jaising tweeted, "It’s wonderful to know that the CJI brought his foster children to court. Humanising the court (and) making it less intimidating. I was once reprimanded by security for taking a child into court, saying “ children not allowed here”." Sources said the CJI decided to bring his daughters to the court as they wanted to see the physical functioning of the courtroom. Justice Chandrachud took over the as the CJI on November 9 and would remain in the office till November 10, 2024. On the first day in office, the CJI's wife Kalpana Das accompanied him to the SC premises including in his chamber.

Chief Justice of India gives tour of workplace to daughters

By Kanu Sarda: The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud reached the Supreme Court with his specially-abled daughters to give them a unique tour of his workplace. Following his foster daughters’ desire to visit the Supreme Court, CJI Chandrachud decided to fulfil their wish on Friday by giving them a quick tour before hearing the day’s court proceedings. CJI Chandrachud himself escorted them to his chamber and to Court Number 1 through the public gallery where he conducts all his hearings. As per information, he was calmly explaining to his daughters, Mahi (16) and Priyanka (20), about the courtroom and the way proceedings were heard in the courtroom. CJI DY Chandrachud took over as CJI in November, 2022 and will serve for two years. He has two sons, Abbhinav and Chintan, who are lawyers at Bombay High Court and Brick Court Chambers, London, respectively.
