He studied up to seventh standard and was doing some odd jobs. At the age of 17, he left for Mumbai (then Bombay) in search of a livelihood. He started off as a driver in a hotel in Mumbai, like many youths of KR Pet and Nagamangala taluks. He worked even as a server in hotels, later as manager. He then opened a hotel, meanwhile, he completed SSLC and did a diploma in Hotel Management to equip himself better for the hospitality industry. At present, Narayana Gowda owns three hotels. Besides, he also developed townships in Kolhapur. He is the founding director of Jayalakshmi Cooperative Bank in Mumbai. He is also the president of Horanadu Kannada Sangha in Mumbai. In a surprise move, the Congress has declared Anup Iyengar, a political novice, as its candidate for Malleswaram and he will take on IT/BT Minister C N Ashwathnarayan of the BJP. Candidates to file papers for K.R. Pet bypolls today

Candidates from the three major political parties, for the December 5 byelections to K.R. Pet Assembly segment, are expected to display their show of strength in K.R. Pet on Monday by holding mega nomination-filing rallies. Monday is the last day to file nomination papers , and Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and a host of political bigwigs are expected to take part in the rallies. K.C. Narayana Gowda, disqualified K.R. Pet MLA, is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the elections. B.L. Devaraj and K.B. Chandrashekar, contestants from the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress respectively, are also filing their papers on Monday with processions, according to sources. Mr. Chandrashekar is a former MLA, while Mr. Devaraj is an advocate. Mr. Devaraj has requested a member of the family of the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to participate in the rally, a senior JD(S) member said. A host of Congress leaders, including former Ministers M.S. Atmananda, N. Cheluvarayaswamy and P.M.
