Thirteen architects pick their favourite buildings in India

We contacted 13 prominent architects in India and asked them to pick a building in India that has been particularly inspirational to them and influential on their practice. Among their choices are three buildings by the most famous Indian architect, Most were built in the four decades following India's independence from the British Empire in 1947. All of the buildings selected were designed by men, reflecting the historic overwhelming dominance of men in India's architecture profession, with Sheila Sri Prakash becoming the first woman in the country to set up her own studio in 1979. Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai by Charles Correa is one fine example of a modernist approach to vertical housing. "The modularity allows for the much-needed cross ventilation of winds in humid Mumbai while allowing occupants the comfort of deep verandahs and terraces akin to old bungalows or villas. When seen as a part of the city's skyline, Kanchenjunga truly stands apart – stoic and robust. "The almost plug-and-play cellular network of units, their terraces and fenestrations, work in perfect sync to create a sculptural marvel with gestures of human occupation. "What we truly love about this bu...

KANCHANJUNGA APARTMENTS

Mumbai 1970–83 In Bombay a building has to be oriented east-west to catch the prevailing sea-breezes, and to open up the best views in the city: the Arabian Sea on one side and the harbour on the other. But these unfortunately are also the directions of the hot sun and the heavy monsoon rains. The old bungalows solved these problems by wrapping a protective layer of verandahs around the main living areas, thus providing the occupants with two lines of defence against the elements. Kanchanjunga, an attempt to apply these principles to a high-rise building, is a condominium of 32 luxury apartments of four different types, varying from 3 to 6 bedrooms each. The interlock of these variations are expressed externally by the shear end walls that hold up the cantilevers. The tower has a proportion of 1:4 (being 21 metres square and 84 metres high). Its minimalist unbroken surfaces are cut away to open up the double-height terrace gardens at the corners, thus revealing (through the interlocking form and colour) some hint of the complex spatial organisation of living spaces that lie within the tower.

Kanchanjunga Apartments by Charles Correa, Mumbai

Designed by In 1970, when Correa was commissioned to build these high income flats, he wondered if he could use concepts like spatial zoning, climate control and views that he had used elsewhere (especially those ideas used in the unbuilt Cosmopolis of 1958, and Rallis Apartments). The challenge was irresistible, and with Corbusier’s image of skip level sections, Sadie’s Montreal Habitat and his own housing experiments, he plunged into the task. A task that finally resulted in the completion of Kanchanjunga in 1983, some thirteen years after its inception. This project was completed with Pravina Mehta as an associate architect and Shirish Patel as the structural engineer. The Kanchanjunga Apartments are a direct response to the present culture, the escalating urbanization, and the climatic conditions for the region. They pay homage to the vernacular architecture that once stood on the site before the development in a number of ways. The basic concept behind the design and structure was to give its residents the sense that they were living in a bungalow, a luxury unheard of in Mumbai. The building is oriented east-west to catch prevailing sea breezes and to take advantage of the best views of the city. Unfortunately, these are also the directions of the hot sun and the heavy monsoon rains. Hence, Correa used the old bungalow solution to these problems by wrapping a protective layer of verandas around the main living areas, thus providing the occupants with two lines of defe...

3 Classic Masterpieces by Architect Charles Correa

Charles Correa was a well-known Indian architect, an urban planner, activist and theoretician. He was one of the few contemporary architects who addressed the issues related to low-income housing. Also, he was one of the pioneers responsible for creating modern architecture in post-independent India. More than 100 buildings are designed by him in India, ranging from low-income housing to luxury condos. Moreover, Correa respected the local culture around the sites and hence used the local materials as well as techniques to provide creative and modern solutions for his designs. Among the many famous and innovative structures designed by Ar. Charles Correa, let’s go through three classic masterpieces by him. 1. Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya at Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad (1958-1963) The site of Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya is situated on the bank of Sabarmati River. The project is a part of the larger ashram complex and is integrated into gardens. The interior space follows a grid planning pattern. The five enclosed rooms house the collection of the museum. Brick is the primary material used in the construction of the structure, and it also helps in giving an earthy feeling to the whole space. Moreover, wooden louvered screens are used for ventilation. These rooms are connected by a semi-open pathway. Correa has used a 6-meter square module for all the rooms. Also, subtle changes to this module give away to a variety of enclosure arrangements resulting in an array of lighting, vis...
