Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Belthangady constituency of Dakshina Kannada, Harish Poonja, who had stirred a controversy by claiming that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah got 24 Hindu activists killed, got relief from the Karnataka High Court on Friday, June 9.The High Court bench headed by Justice M Nagaprasanna stayed the police investigation into the case. Three complaints were registered against the BJP MLA in Puttur, Belthangady and Bantwal police stations. Appearing for Poonja, senior counsel Prabhuling Navadagi submitted in the court that the case is not fit to be lodged against the BJP MLA under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence).Considering the argument, the bench issued a stay on the investigation. Poonja had made the controversial remarks while venting out ire on Hindu activists who campaigned for Congress recently. The audio and video of his outbursts went viral on social media. Bengaluru: Karnataka Lokayukta police on Monday arrested ruling Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Madal Virupakshappa, hours after the Karnataka high court rejected his anticipatory bail application in a corruption case. On March 2, in what caused the BJP embarrassment, Virupakshappa was named the main accused in a corruption case lodged by the Karnataka Lokayukta after his son was caught taking a bribe of ₹40 lakh. In the raids that followed, Lokayukta authorities recovered ₹6.1 crore in cash from his Sanjay Nagar residence and ₹2.2 crore from his office. A total of ₹8.23 crore in cash, a huge quantity of gold and silver ornaments and large investments in land in Karnataka were allegedly uncovered. He was absconding for 5 days after his son was arrested along with 4 others while taking a bribe of Rs 40 lakhs. The MLA from Channagiri later on while addressing his supporters said that he is totally confident that he will be acquitted in the present case. Denying the allegations made against him and commenting on the recovery of Rs 6 crore from his home by Lokayukta, he said that the source of money seized from his house was not corruption. The money is the income from agriculture and legitimate businesses run by his family. Madal Virupakshappa's Advocate K Suman said, "Prima facie there's no material in FIR or in the complaint. Therefore the court granted anticipatory bail to MLA Madal Virupakshappa." Earlier, an FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint filed by a chemical company in the matter, which claimed that the company floated a tender for fragrant oil in January, following which Virupakshappa's son Prashanth allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 81 lakh. According to the FIR, the complainant alleges that the accused claimed the purchase order and bills related to the tender would be passed immediately if the bribe is paid. The repeated demand for kickbacks led the complainant to approach the Lokayukta. Based on the complaint, Prashanth was caught red-handed with Rs 40 lakh bribe by the Lokayukta. During the raid, Prashanth along with his accountant and three bribe givers were reportedly taken into custody. Further investigation into the matter is being conducted.

Continuing with raids after catching BJP MLA`s son red-handed while accepting Rs 40 lakh bribe, the Lokayukta authorities have recovered Rs 7.62 crore in his and his aides` residences, sources confirmed on Friday, adding that raids are going on at MLA`s places. Lokayukta sleuths have found the cash at the residence and office of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa`s son, Prashanth, who worked as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Chief Accountant. The authorities have arrested five persons in this connection, including Prashanth. Siddesh, a relative of Prashanth, accountant Surendra, and two others named Nicholas and Gangadhar, who came to hand over the cash of Rs 40 lakh have been arrested, Lokayukta sources said. The accused will be produced before the Lokayukta Special Court and will be taken into their custody for further probe. The raids have also been conducted at the residence and office of BJP MLA from Channagiri constituency, Madal Virupakshappa at K.M.V. Mansion in Sanjaynagar locality of Bengaluru. The authorities have seized documents and other evidence from the residences. Prashanth was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta while accepting Rs 40 lakh bribe on Thursday. The BJP MLA was arrested while he was on his way to Bengaluru from Channagiri after attending an event. Virupakshappa, who was the first accused in the case, was granted interim anticipatory bail by a single-member bench of the High Court. The High Court on Monday dismissed the main petition filed by the MLA seeking bail. Lokayukta police started searching for Virupakshappa soon after the High Court verdict was announced. Several Lokayukta police had started a search, including a house in Bangalore and a house in Channeshpur (Madal) in Channagiri. Virupakshappa was taken into custody from near Kyathasandra toll plaza in Tumakuru hours after his bail application was rejected by the Karnataka High Court. We arrested him in Tumakuru when he (the MLA) was on the way to Bengaluru," Lokayukta Inspector General of Police A Subramanyeshwara Rao told news agency PTI. Last week, the High Court reserved its judgment in the matter. The case is related to the alleged demand and receipt of bribes for allotting a contract for supplying chemicals to the state-run company.
