‘Karthikeya 2’ movie review: A partly engaging thriller that gets too preachy

Imagine Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code in an Indian context, with a story built around Hindu symbolism and semiotics. Writer-director Chandoo Mondeti’s Karthikeya 2 is in such a zone, with the protagonists (Nikhil Siddhartha and Anupama Parameswaran) discovering clues and trying to unearth hidden truths as members of a secret society are at their heels. The premise is also reminiscent of Ashwin Sanghi’s book The Krishna Key. This isn’t to say that the stories are the same, but there are the broad similarities — secret societies, codes and symbols, anthropologists and archeologists and the ever-present danger from those who have ulterior motives. Chandoo Mondeti’s Karthikeya was a smaller and more intimate film in which Dr Karthik (Nikhil), an atheist, relied on science and logic to unravel secrets in the Subrahmanya swami temple in Subrahmanyapuram. Driven by curiosity, he refuses to believe in superstitions and gets to the bottom of mysterious killings. Karthikeya 2 is a different chapter in Dr Karthik’s life. He is still driven by curiosity but this time, the turn of events warrants him to not look at everything through the lens of science and logic. The film opens with a note stating that it is a fiction based on history. Later in the film, a character says Gods are our ancestors and what we term as mythology is history. An anklet of lord Krishna, which is safely hidden in a corner of the earth and which has the answers to the world’s problems, is the bone of contention ...

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: An adventurous ride you need

Karthikeya 2 Story: A doctor with a curious mind, Karthikeya, aka Karthik, believes in pursuing the truth. An archaeologist identifies him to find Lord Krishna’s anklet with an inscription to cure a pandemic. The quest leads Karthik to discover the power of the ancient Indian belief system and the essence of Krishna. Karthikeya 2 Review: Of late, there has been a wave of interest and pride in the Indian culture, history and belief system. The fantasy drama explores the same and takes the audience on an adventurous ride instead of making the narrative didactic and heavy. Karthik (Nikhil Siddharth) is a doctor with a curious mind and a passion for demystifying things, and he places truth over blind faith (in fact, even faith in general). An incident leads to his suspension from the hospital for two weeks, and he ends up in Dwaraka, Gujarat, for a religious trip with his mother. A wild adventure ensues when an archaeologist entrusts him with locating Krishna’s anklet, which the head of a secret society, Shantanu (Adithya Menon), is also after. Rao’s granddaughter Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran), Karthik’s uncle and a truck driver, Suleman (Harsha Chemudu), join him in his pursuit. Chapter two of Karthikeya (2014) is an upscaled standalone story with nothing to do with part one. Karthikeya 2 is a visually-striking and well-researched film that’s a thrilling treasure hunt with deadly Abhiras who won’t let anyone lay their hands on Krishna’s belongings and a villain Shantanu (Adit...

Karthikeya 2: A Mis

Star Cast: Nikhil Siddharth, Anupama Parameswaran, Anupam Kher, Srinivasa Reddy, Harsha Chemudu, and Adithya Menon. Karthikeya 2 review Cinematography& Editedby Karthik Ghattamneni Music Composed by Kaala Bhairava Written& Directed by Chandoo Mondeti During Diwali, most of us like to fire up crackers and eat some sweets. No matter what we do, one funny thing does happen always, at least one rocket cracker goes into the neighborhood aunty or uncle’s house whom we fear most. They end up hating us more and we run away from the situation to look innocent. Imagine, if we fire up a cracker and took all the necessary precautions and forgot to aim it properly in a container, and at the last moment, it flew into some stranger’s house. The stranger happens to be a person who doesn’t give up on a chance to fight or maybe this cracker-caused fire accident at their place. That person will hunt for you and with the power that stranger holds, you may have to pay the burden of your actions. Now adding some sauce to the situation, let’s say, you’re able to hide well enough and your neighborhood is filled with your friends, hence saving you or with people who don’t know you hence you’re safe enough as they don’t help the stranger in identifying you. Adding some more sauce, along with you some more fired rocket crackers at the same moment or some moments before or after, so you’ve a chance to escape. The stranger will be shocked and with the effort, it takes to find the true “ culprit“, he o...

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: A worthy successor that takes the story forward

Story: Before the Kalyug begins, Lord Krishna hands over an anklet that holds the answer to all of world’s miseries. Years later a doctor finds himself in the thick of things when the pursuit for the anklet carries on. Review: Chandoo Mondeti made a successful debut years ago with Karthikeya, hinting that the titular character Nikhil Siddhartha plays allowed for the series to carry on through his quest for truth. With Karthikeya 2, he does the same, leaving the ending open for another part in the series that takes us on an adventure along with the curious doctor. Karthik (Nikhil Siddhartha) is now a doctor who has a successful career not just in the medical field but also otherwise as a myth-buster. We’re told that after the events at Subrahmanyapuram, he has continued to provide logical answers to supposedly supernatural questions across the country. When his mother (Tulasi) takes him along to Dwaraka, he finds himself in midst of an adventure he did not seek out. With a murderous clan and a secret society on his heels, will he and Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran) manage to find a missing anklet that might hold the answers to a future catastrophe? Chandoo ups the ante with Karthikeya 2 when it comes to Nikhil’s character and the extent of danger he finds himself in. While the prequel spent a lot of time exploring his agnostic character’s curious nature, apart from his love story with Valli (Swathi, who’s completely missing from this tale with no answers given), the sequel di...
