‘Cuttputlli’ movie review: Akshay Kumar is both the strength and weakness of this thriller with loose strings

‘Cuttputlli’ movie review: Akshay Kumar is both the strength and weakness of this thriller with loose strings The Hindi remake of Vishnu Vishal’s ‘Ratsasan’ comes across as a generic thriller that fails to generate any emotional connection with the characters September 02, 2022 05:40 pm | Updated 05:42 pm IST This Monsoon, the Hindi cinematic universe is being flooded with thrillers, remakes, and Akshay Kumar. This week we have a three-in-one situation: a thriller that is a remake of a Tamil hit and stars Akshay Kumar in his third film in three months. Overkill, anyone? Aspiring to be described as a slow-burn, Cuttputlli is an air-popped thriller that feels like one of those episodes of C.I.D. that keeps you interested without ever aiming to be outstanding. It is the kind of film where the officer doesn’t see the obvious detail until the hero points it out. There are no editing tricks or unsettling sounds; the saving grace is that it doesn’t make any overt attempt to pull us to the edge of the seat. Faithful to the source, Tamil film Ratsasan (2018), it chases a serial killer who brutally targets teenaged schoolgirls in the scenic town of Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh and leaves the brutalised face of Cinderella dolls as his signature. He is pursued by Arjan Sethi (Akshay Kumar), a sub inspector who was once an aspiring filmmaker, specialising in stories of serial killers. Spurned by producers, Arjan joins the police on the advice of his brother-in-law Narinder (Chandrachur ...

Cuttputlli Movie Review And Rating {2.5/5}: Akshay Kumar's Film Fails To Pull The Right Strings To Put On A Thrilling Show

During a narration when a producer advises Arjan, an aspiring filmmaker (Akshay Kumar) to tweak the climax of his script, the latter refuses to budge and explains his stance before adamantly declaring, "Kahaani wahi khatam hogi naa usse pehle na usse baad." Later, he even tells his friend, "Script se jhoot nahin bol raha main. Agar banege toh aise hi banegi." If only like his main protagonist Arjan, director Ranjit M Tewari too had refrained from fiddling with an important plot device, his latest outing, Cuttputlli would have been a nail-biting ride. Instead, what Akshay Kumar and Co. offer you is a bleak version of Vishnu Vishal's bone-chilling Tamil hit, Ratsasan which has heart-pouding moments that are countable on your fingertips. Story Cuttputlli opens in Parwanno, Himachal Pradesh where two joggers discover a mutilated body of a teenage girl in a public place. Elsewhere, Arjan (Akshay Kumar), an aspiring director is looking for a producer who will back his filmmaking debut as he is keen to make a film on a serial killer. Sadly, due to family circumstances, Arjan is forced to give up his starry dreams. At one point, his sister Seema (Hrishitaa Bhatt) even tells him, "Raakhi ke din khaaki pehen le." With the help of his brother-in-law, Arjan becomes a sub-inspector in Kasauli. Meanwhile, young girls continue to vanish in the quaint town, only to be found mutilated and dead. Arjan channels his inner desi Sherlock Homes and proposes that there is a serial killer on the p...
