2020 Kawasaki Ninja 650

The 2020 Kawasaki Ninja 650 has finally come into its own, with a light restyle and TFT display capping off needed improvements introduced back in 2017. Photos by Kevin Wing. What a difference a few years make. When we pitted the Ninja 650 against two rivals In addition to the significant weight loss, the Ninja’s 2017 training regimen included improvements to its engine, brakes and ergonomics. The liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve-per-cylinder, 649cc parallel twin was retuned for better performance in the low- to midrange, where most street riders spend the majority of their time, and it got new injectors for more precise fueling, a mechanical gear position indicator, a revised airbox, a redesigned exhaust and smaller throttle bodies. A new 2-piston Nissin front brake caliper provided noticeably better performance and feel, and optional Bosch 9.1M ABS was said to be lighter and more responsive. ( Included in the restyle are twin LED headlights that proved to be extremely bright for both daytime visibility and nighttime usefulness. Wide mirrors offer a good view of more than just the rider’s elbows. Photo by Kevin Wing. For 2020, the Ninja 650 seems to have reached a milestone in its development, with refined styling that brings it inline with its ZX-6R and ZX-10R siblings, a new 4.3-inch full-color TFT display with switchable background color and ambient light sensor, connectivity to Kawasaki’s Rideology app and the latest Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 tires. Review: 2021 Ninja 650 hits the mark

Kawasaki Heavy Industries can be informally credited with developing the sport bike genre for the streets. They may not have produced the first sporty-crouchy-racey street bike but, after the release of the GPZ900R in 1984, Kawasaki ad folks shrewdly recognized what they had and eagerly trademarked the term Kawasaki Ninja. With the popularity of the GPZ, “ninja bike” quickly became the catch-all term for machines that fit the ubiquitous fairing silhouette. The 2021 Ninja 650 ABS carries on the tradition in the Kawasaki Ninja sport-bike line, perched nicely in the cat birds’ seat above the Ninja 400 ABS twin and below the Ninja 1000 ABS. The suspension is budget friendly with 41mm non-adjustable front legs and a cam-ring preload rear shock — it’s basic stuff to keep the price down but it’s adequate, provided expectations are kept appropriate. Rough pavement occasionally allowed the bike to step out when pushed hard in chattery stuff but it’s anticipated and easily controllable. Brakes are wave-edged 300mm front rotors with two-piston calipers and a single 220mm rear. Good for the price point, they only show their budget sourcing if used repeatedly in anger. ABS is a $400 upsell but always worth the extra dosh. Rubber is Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2, an upgrade over previous years and has good road feel. Overall, the bike sits a bit small for me at 6 foot but the bar and peg reach is comfy, not too low. The new upper cowl and windscreen have been redesigned to divert more air...

2023 Kawasaki Ninja 650 First Look

Kawasaki is bringing back both the Ninja 650 and Z650 for 2023 with one significant update – traction control. Formerly a rider aid only for the most powerful sportbikes on the planet, the safety benefits of traction control reach far beyond trying to go quickly around a racetrack. The two-step KTRC system does not feature the exotic IMUs that flagship sportbikes use, but a more modest system. In mode 1, KTRC allows the rear tire to slip a little more and doesn’t intervene as early. It’s a sport setting designed to allow the rider maximum drive and acceleration off a corner. Mode 2 is more conservative, intervening earlier than in mode 1 and is ideal for riding in bad weather or low-grip situations. Then, for riders who insist on being in complete control of their engine’s power, KTRC can be turned off entirely. Visually and mechanically, both the Ninja and Z 650s don’t deviate much from last year’s model – not that that’s a bad thing. The Ninja-inspired looks remain, as does the tried-and-true 649cc parallel-Twin engine, petal brake discs, and meager suspension. See the press release below for full details. For 2023, the Ninja 650 is available in Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray / Ebony or Pearl Robotic White / Metallic Matte Flat Raw Graystone / Ebony, with an MSRP of $7,999. The Ninja 650 KRT Edition modeled after the Kawasaki Racing Team is available in Lime Green / Ebony, with an MSRP of $8,199, and is also available with ABS with an MSRP of $8,599. The 2023 Z650 is ...
