Transport Minister Antony Raju has said that the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will roll out world-class driving licence cards similar to smart cards from next month. He was inaugurating ‘Vahaneeyam - 2022’ a district-level grievance redressal adalat of the department at C. Kesavan Memorial Town Hall here on Saturday. “The major mission of the department in May, June, and July is to completely stop offences such as using mobile phone while driving and not wearing seatbelt and helmet. The grievance redressal adalats will be held in all the districts within mid-June. Vehicle permits and vehicle licences of those involved in serious crimes will be revoked,” said the Minister who also instructed the officials to resolve the grievances in a timely manner. Among the 1,162 complaints received from various offices in the district, 940 were resolved at the adalat. Advait, a first year degree student who had to amputate his left arm at the age of one due to cancer, received his learner’s licence from the Minister. Though the Karunagapally resident had applied for licence seven months back, the process was getting delayed due to technical issues. As per Advait’s request, the facility for learner’s test was arranged at the venue and the licence was handed over by the Minister who assured that the department was with him for all licence-related assistance. Thiruvananthapuram: The Minister of Transport, Antony Raju, has announced that holders of laminated driving licenses may now convert their licenses to the new smart card format by paying a fee of Rs 200, plus necessary postal charges. The new PETG cards are designed in the same style as ATM cards and are considered to be highly secure, with tamper-proof features. To apply for the new smart license, license holders are not required to submit their old license cards. They can apply through the Parivahan portal, and for a limited time, there is a relaxation in the fee. However, this relaxation in fee will only be available this year. After this period, a fee of Rs 1200 and any applicable postal charges will be required. • Enter the website • Click the option ‘Online Services’ and choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’ from the drop down menu (Click hamburger button to see the option ‘Online Services’ in your mobile phone) • Choose the respective state from the option ‘Select State Name’ appearing on the next page • Select ‘Replacement of DL’ from the options available in the next page • Enter driving licence number, date of birth, and captcha, and click Get DL details. • Confirm the details appearing in the next page are correct and select the RTO office. Now click proceed. • Upload a passport size photo, signature and attested copy of the licence • Option to pay the fee Rs 245 will be available in the next page.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is gearing up to roll out smart card driving licences in the state. The system, which was implemented at the motor vehicles department (MVD) offices in Thiruvananthapuram, Kudappanakunnu, Kozhikode and Wayanad on an experimental basis, will soon be extended across the state. With the new move, those who pass driving tests will be issued smart card licences instead of laminated ones. The Centre had directed the use of PVC PET-G cards embedded with and without microprocessor chips for the purpose. However, several states, including Kerala, have decided to opt for cards without chips, owing to technical difficulties.
