The Kheda Struggle

• • • • The Kheda Struggle • • The Kheda Struggle by M.K. Gandhi No breathing time was, however, in store for me. Hardly was the Ahmedabad mill-hands' strike over, when I had to plunge into the Kheda Satyagraha struggle. A condition approaching famine had arisen in the Kheda district owing to a widespread failure of crops, and the Patidars of Kheda were considering the question of getting the revenue assessment for the year suspended. Sjt. Amritlal Thakkar had already inquired into and reported on the situation and personally discussed the question with the Commissioner, before I gave definite advice to the cultivators. Sjts. Mohanlal Pandya and Shankarlal Parikh had also thrown themselves into the fight, and had set up an agitation in the Bombay Legislative Council through Sjt. Vithalbhai Patel and the late Sir Gokuldas Kahandas Parekh. More than one deputation had waited upon the Governor in that connection. I was at this President of the Gujarat Sabha. The Sabha sent petitions and telegrams to the Government and even patiently swallowed the insults and threats of the Commissioner. The conduct of the officials on this occasion was so ridiculous and undignified as to be almost incredible now. The cultivators' demand was as clear as daylight, and so moderate as to make out a strong case for its acceptance. Under the Land Revenue Rules, if the crop was four annas or under, the cultivators could claim full suspension of the revenue assessment for the year. According to the o...

The Kheda Satyagraha 1918

The Kheda Satyagraha of 1918 • It was the first non-cooperation movement of Gandhiji. • It was the third Satyagraha movement after Champaran Satyagraha and the Ahmedabad mill strike. • Gandhi organised this movement to support peasants of the Kheda district. • People of Kheda were unable to pay the high taxes levied by the British due to crop failure and a plague epidemic. • In Gujarat, Gandhi was chiefly the spiritual head of the struggle. • His chief lieutenant, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and a close coterie of devoted Gandhians, namely Indulal Yagnik, Shankarlal Banker, Mahadev Desai, Narhari Parikh, Mohanlal Pandya and Ravi Shankar Vyas toured the countryside, organised the villagers and gave them political leadership and direction. • Patel and his colleagues organised a major tax revolt, and all the different ethnic and caste communities of Kheda rallied around it. • The peasants of Kheda signed a petition calling for the tax for this year to be scrapped in wake of the famine. • The government in Bombay rejected the charter. • They warned that if the peasants did not pay, the lands and property would be confiscated and many arrested. • And once confiscated, they would not be returned even if most complied. None of the villages flinched. • The tax withheld, the government’s collectors and inspectors sent in thugs to seize property and cattle, while the police forfeited the lands and all agrarian property. • The farmers did not resist arrest, nor retaliate to the force em...

Hint Kheda Movement or Kheda Satyagraha is known for its support to peasants during the British Raj since they were unable to pay the high taxes levied on them due to failure of crop and plague. Complete answer: The Kheda Movement or Satyagraha organised by Mahatma Gandhi in 1918 was for the support of peasants of Kheda, Gujarat. This struggle is also known as no-tax peasant struggle. The movement was launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, N.M. Joshi, Indulal Yajnik, Shankerlal Pareek and several others. This movement was the one like in Champaran, based on non-violence. This provided an opportunity to non-peasanty people to establish contact with the actual peasantry life and stand for them. Kheda, in central Gujarat is quite fertile for the cultivation of tobacco and cotton. A few causes of the movement are mentioned below - 1. On reassessing the land of Kheda and the crops, the revenue was increased which was unacceptable for the peasants 2. Peasants suffered from famine which resulted in crop failure. The government did not accept this and insisted on full realisation of land tax. However peasantry emphasised persistently that the government was not justified in demanding full tax 3. The peasants were frequently plagued by poverty, famines, scant resource, untouchability, alcoholism and British discrimination 4. The Bombay Presidency increased the taxes in 1917-18 by 23% Gujarat Sabha wrote petitions and telegrams to the government f...

Satyagraha

Origin of Satyagraha :Term and Influences Gandhi was in need of a term to connote the revolution against the British imperialists that he organized in South Africa. 'Passive resistance', his first perfunctory choice, was not only a foreign term that Gandhi had strong reservations about, but the connotations of the term was also inadequate to highlight the aspect of truth and moral courage that Gandhi associated with non-violent political resistance. Moreover, it put political ends at the forefront, dissociated from deeper ideological values. Gandhi needed an Indian name that could encompass all these aspects of the revolution within it. A competition was thrown open in the local newspaper, 'Indian Opinion', and 'sadagraha' was elected as the best entry. Gandhi took the term, but changed it to 'satyagraha' highlighting the aspect of 'truth' in it. 'Satyagraha' was based on the principles of non violence, which was the founding principle of Gandhi's political ideology, that was based on as much as theological tenets of Jainism, Buddhism, Upanishads and the Bhagwatgita, as on the political theories of Tolstoy, Ruskin and Thureau. Definition and Method Satyagraha is fundamentally a way of life, which guides the modes of political activism undertaken by the followers of its principle (or satyagrahis). On a personal front it involves a life committed to truth, chastity, non-attachment and hard-work. On the political front, satyagraha involves utilisation of non-violent measures ...

Before taking up the Labour dispute Gandhi wanted to move his ashrama. The Satyagraha Ashrama was in a village near Ahmedabad, but the surroundings were not clean and plague had broken out. It had spread there from Ahmedabad. A rich merchant of Ahmedabad, who was closely associated with the ashrama, volunteered to procure a suitable piece of land. Gandhi went about with him looking for land and at last they chose a place on the bank of the Sabarmati Ashrama was started. In Ahmedabad there were many textile mills. Prices had gone up and the mill workers were demanding higher wages. The mill owners would not agree. Gandhi sympathized with the workers and took up their cause. He launched a struggle and resorted to peaceful resistance. The workers proudly followed Gandhi and pledged their full support to him. They paraded the streets with large banners, and said they would not go back to work until a settlement had been reached. Days passed. The mill owners were adamant. Summary of Kheda Peasant Struggle (1918)

ADVERTISEMENTS: Summary of Kheda Peasant Struggle (1918)! The Kheda peasant struggle is also known as no-tax peasant struggle. It was a satyagraha launched in March 1919 under the leadership of Gandhiji, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Indulal Yajnik, N.M. Joshi, Shankerlal Pareekh and several others. It was again an experiment, quite like that of Champaran, made on non-violence. It was also participated by intelligentsia. Incidentally, the movement provided an opportunity to the educated public workers to establish contact with the actual life of the peasantry. The educated workers learnt to identify themselves with the peasantry and made themselves available for sacrifices. ADVERTISEMENTS: The Kheda peasantry mainly consisted of the Patidar peasants. The Patidars have always been known for their skills in agriculture. The land of Kheda a part of central Gujarat is quite fertile for the cultivation of tobacco and cotton crops. Educationally also, the Patel cultivators are well-off. The struggle of the peasants was organised for several causes. However, a few important causes are given below: (1) The government reassessed the Kheda land and the cultivated crops. On the basis of land data, collected in this way, the revenue was increased. This was unacceptable to the peasants. (2) The peasants had suffered a famine and this had resulted in a large-scale failure of crops. The government, however, did not accept the failure of crops and insisted on the full realisation of land ta...
