In 1398, the Turko-Mongol invader, The then Many newly independent states sprang up during this period of chaos: • Bahamani, Vijaynagar (in the Deccan), Bengal, Sindh, Gujarat, Malwa, Jaunpur (eastern UP). • The Muslim governor of Ajmer was expelled and the Rajputana state became independent again. The last two dynasties- Sayyid and Lodi- were not strong enough to hold together the sultanate and more kingdoms began declaring independence over the century of their rule. Khizr Khan did not take up the title of Sultan and continued to be a Rayat-i-Ala (vassal) of the Timurids. The sayyid dynasty ruled from 1414 to 1451 until the Lodi dynasty took over. The sayyid rule was weak and confined areas in and around Delhi. The 37 years of sayyids saw only 4 rulers. Khizr Khan Annie Lee | Feb 9, 2023 Table of Content • • Summary Sayyid Khizr Khan ibn Malik Suleiman (? - May 20, 1421) was a sultan of the Delhi Sultanate (1414-1421), founder of the Sayyid dynasty, the ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate in northern India. Hizr Khan was the governor of Multan in the Punjab under the Delhi Sultan Firuza Shah of the Tughlaqid dynasty and was known as an able administrator. He did not take any title because of fear of Tamerlane. During his reign, coins continued to be minted in the name of previous rulers of the Tuglakid dynasty. After his death on May 20, 1421, he was succeeded by his son Mubarak Khan, who took the title Muiz-ud-Din Mubarak-Shah. The Indian chronicler Yahya Sirhindi mentions in his book Tahrir-e-Mubarak Shahi that Khizr Khan was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, but his conclusion was based only on the testimony of Saint Seyid Jalal-ud-Din Bukhari of Uch Sharif. Malik Mardan Daulat, the ruler of Multan, adopted Khizr Khan's father, Malik Sulayman. Malik Suleiman succeeded Malik Sheikh, son of Malik Mardan, as governor. After his death, Firuz Shah Tughlaq appointed Khizr Khan as governor of Multan. But in 1395 he was expelled from Multan by Sarang-Khan, brother of Mallu Iqbal-Khan. Sayyid Dynasty (1414-1451 A.D.) The Sayyid Sultans ruled for a relatively short period. There’were four Sayyid kings.’Khizr Khan Sayyid (1414-1421 A.D.) Khizr Khan was the’governor of Multan under Firoz Shah Tughluq. After Firoz’s’death, he supported his son in the war of succession. When’Timur attacked India, he joined him. When Timur left India,’he appointed Khizr Khan as the governor of Multan, Lahore’and Dipalpur. Khizr Khan conquered Delhi in 1414 A.D. and’started the rule of the Sayyids. Mubarak Shah Sayyid (1421-1434 A.D.) Mubarak Shah’succeeded his father. He was a man of vision and could have’revived the old glory of the Sultanate. The nobles, however,’were against him. Most of his time, therefore, was spent in’controlling his nobles. Muhammad Shah Sayyid (1434-1443 A.D.) Muhammad’Shah was Mubarak Shah’s nephew. During his reign, the nobles’became very powerful. Ala-ud-din Alam Shah Sayyid (1443-1451 A.D.) Alam Shah’was the next ruler. He lost Delhi to Bahlul Lodi in the year 1451.’With this, the brief rule of the Sayyid kings came to an end.

Timur’s deputy khizr khan was the founder of Sayyid Dynasty. Khizr khan was the first ruler of Sayyid dynasty. He rules delhi from 1414 to 1421 AD. The name of other rulers of this dynasty are Mubarak khan,( who succeeded khizr khan), Muhammad shah (1434-43), and the last king was Alam shah (1443-51 AD). Confusion was prevailing in India after the last Tughlaq, Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud Shah Tughlaq died. At this time Timur’s deputy in India and the Governor of Multan, Khizr Khan marched to Delhi and defeated Daulat Khan, the military head and occupied the throne. This led to the rise of the fourth dynasty in power of the Delhi Sultanate. The family asserted themselves as the descendants of Muhammad (Sayyids). Khizr Khan, who founded the Sayyid Dynasty and took over as the first ruler in 1414, originally did not take the title of sultan and continued to be Rayat-i-Ala or Vassal (feudatory with mutual obligation to the ruler in exchange for certain privileges) of Timurdis. As a mark of recognition to his dedication, the name of Mongol ruler Shah Rukh (the fourth son of Timur lane) was suffixed to his name. He appointed Malik-us-Sharq Malik Tuhfa as the wazir of his court and gave him the title of Taj-ul-Mulk. With his help, Khizr khan opposed the rebellion of Har Singh, the Raja of Katehar.
