Why Hyundai and Kia have others playing catch

In the past few years, Hyundai and Kia vehicles have skyrocketed to the top of Edmunds’ rankings in some of the most popular vehicle segments. For example, you’ll find a Hyundai or Kia in the top spots for three-row midsize SUVs, midsize sedans, and multiple categories of electric vehicles. This changing of the guard can come as a surprise for car shoppers expecting to see more familiar brands like Chevrolet, Ford, Honda and Toyota. This success isn’t attributable to one single factor, such as short-lived marketing schemes like rock-bottom pricing or unsustainable rebates. Let’s take a closer look at what these sister South Korean automakers are doing well and where they’re still coming up short. Distinctive design First impressions matter, and this holds true when people are shopping for a new vehicle. Hyundai and Kia clearly recognize the importance of standing out in a crowd. Whether it’s a family-friendly SUV with three rows of seating or an electric SUV on the technological cutting edge, a bold exterior draws attention and holds interest. We’ll start with EVs. While they share a platform and electric powertrains, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 take very different approaches to turning heads in the EV market. The Ioniq 5 is all edges and sharp angles, evoking Marty McFly’s time-traveling DeLorean from 1984’s “Back to the Future.” The Kia EV6, on the other hand, is more traditionally handsome with its pointed front end, chunky fenders and sleek tapered tail. More is on...

Kia Warns California EV Infrastructure Needs To Be Better

Kia America COO Steve Center and CEO Sean Yoon met with California Governor Gavin Newsom this month to discuss their concerns, which Center later relayed in an interview with Automotive News published Tuesday: “We will make the EVs, and now we need California to continue effort on infrastructure and consumer education before industry EV volume exceeds capacity and consideration,” Kia COO Steve Center told Automotive News. [...] The state also achieved its goal to hit 1.5 million EV sales by 2025 two years ahead of schedule. But to get to the level of adoption it wants, Center said, the state must do more to advance its charging infrastructure, which includes electricity generation, transmission and dispensing. There are currently 87,707 chargers in California. But according to the California Clean Energy Commission, the state will need 1.2 million public and shared Level 2 and DC Fast chargers by 2030 to support 7.5 million EVs. EV growth will also require improved efficiency at California’s ports and shipping facilities, Center said. He described the ports as a “choking point” for bringing vehicles into the country. “If we cannot improve throughput, we will have to create other pathways into the U.S. market,” he said. “This issue impacts vehicle, parts and manufacturing needs, as well as the consumer.”

The Japanese and Korean automakers are making big strides in the EV market, so the current and upcoming Kia electric cars are quite exciting. More so than a hybrid, they epitomize efficiency and high fuel economy. As the charging network in the USA continues to grow, more and more consumers are showing interest in electric vehicles, so Kia EV cars should see even more sales. The Niro EV will likely be the most popular model due to its value, but in terms of base sp...

First Look at Kia’s Insane $2 Million Concept EV9 Project

Vivid Sydney 2023 is currently in full swing, bringing the Harbour City bursting to life via a smorgasbord of innovative installations and eye-tickling light shows. Each of these injects our chilly winter nights with a welcome vibrancy designed to coax reluctant Sydneysiders out of our hibernation state. However, there’s one attraction this year that stands above the rest, giving Australia its first glimpse at the future of motoring while simultaneously providing a masterclass in the art of design. Yes, the star of this year’s show—apart from the stunning harbour itself—is the Kia Helix, a bold installation designed to showcase the marque’s astonishing Concept EV9. Described by Vivid Sydney as an “animated show set to a crescendo soundscape celebrating a balance of innovation and intuitive, natural design,” the Kia Helix blends futuristic design and organic shapes before unveiling the highly anticipated Concept EV9, an all-electric, seven-seat SUV, through which Kia serves up innovation and cutting-edge design like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Looking at the Future The result of AUD$2 million worth of development, as you take in the Concept EV9’s strong presence, it’s clear that not a cent of that budget was wasted. From its strikingly minimalist design to the interior’s immense sense of space, this one-of-a-kind vehicle (and the polygonal design language used to create it) combines looks and intelligence to create an SUV quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before On appr...

2023 Kia EV6 Review, Pricing, and Specs

6 Chevrolet Bolt EUV STARTING AT: $28,795 What's New for 2023? The ballistically quick GT model takes its place atop the EV6 lineup this year, complete with 576 horsepower and an adaptive suspension. A green button on the steering wheel unlocks the propulsion system's maximum potency, which we estimate will be enough to blast the EV6 to 60 mph in as little as 3.2 seconds in our testing. To go along with its enhanced performance, Kia has also added racier interior elements to the GT's cabin, including sport seats and neon green trim. Unfortunately, the additional juice needed to pump out the extra horsepower cuts the GT's driving range estimate to just 206 miles per charge, a significant drop from the maximum 310-mile range of the most efficient model. The Pricing and Which One to Buy $62,925 We're charmed by the top-spec GT, but we figure most EV buyers are more interested in maximum driving range over maximum performance. For those folks, we recommend the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Wind trim level, not only because it's the most affordable way to get all-weather traction, but also because the dual motors generate a combined 320 horsepower versus the single motor's lower power output. Going with the standard 19-inch wheels also preserves driving range, and the EV6 Wind with all-wheel drive is said to be good for up to 282 miles of driving per charge. 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2023 • 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2023 • 2023 Kia EV6: 10Best Trucks and SUVs EV Motor, Power, a...
