Touted to be one of the most celebrated singers in Indian cinema, Kishore Kumar was one of the few ones who breathed life into lyrics with his melodious voice. It won't be wrong that there's a Kishore da song for every occasion and his songs continue to enthrall generations after generations. Had the music legend been alive today (August 4, 2021), he would have been 92! Speaking about the late singer's sense of humour, Lata recalled, "Kishoreda and I were born in the same year 1929. He was two months older than me, and would never let me forget that.Kishoreda bahot hasaate tthe(he used to make me laugh a lot) so much so that sometimes it used to be a big problem to stop laughing and get to work." She continued, "Kishoreda would crack us up with his jokes and one-liners. It would become a problem when we had to sing a serious song together , I couldn't stop laughing. I had to firmly stop him from his masti , take a break and then sit down to sing a serious song about life love and heartbreak. Then we would go back to the laughter. He would sometimes make me laugh so much that I had tears streaming down my face with laughter." Lata Mangeshkar Recalls Her First Meeting With Dilip Kumar; 'His Light-Hearted Remark Made Me Study Urdu' When asked to pick up her favourite Kishore Kumar song, Lata said, "Oh, that's a tough one! Today, 35 years after 'Kishore Kumar - A Versatile Genius', as one his biographies is titled, left the world, when his melodious songs are being played across mediums and are still being heard by people across all ages, little one would have wondered that these songs went off-air and out of the reach of the people following a government order. It was during the emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government on June 25, 1975. Kishore Kumar's songs were banned from all government mediums during the emergency after he declined to sing at a musical night programme organised by the then Congress government. Moreover, as other popular filmmakers from Mumbai attended, Kishore Kumar even refused to comment on the reasons for his decision to deny the invitation. Mention of 'emergency' in Kishore Kumar's biography Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi, younger son of Indira Gandhi, ordered the then Information and Broadcasting minister to ban Kishore Kumar's songs from all government broadcasting mediums. Kishore Kumar's biographer Shashikant Kinikar says in the biography - 'Kishore Kumar - A Versatile Genius', "Sanjay Gandhi took it (declining to attend the musical night) as his insult and ordered the Information and Broadcasting minister Vidyacharan Shukla that Kishore Kumar's songs should not be played in any of the public broadcasting mediums." Kishore Kumar, the reluctant actor and a rare comedic find who ‘hated every moment’ of his acting career

Kishore Kumar, or as he is lovingly remembered, Kishore Da, was primarily a singer. A wonderful, talented singer and is probably regarded among the top artistes in his field in the entire subcontinent. However, Kishore Da was not just that. Apart from singing, he also dabbled a fair bit in acting. In the initial years, when he was starring in dramatic roles, he was not interested in the arena at all, and agreed to do so only because his brother, veteran actor Ashok Kumar, wanted him to. And so Kishore Kumar debuted in the movies with Shikari (1946), in which Ashok played the lead role. In the following decade, Kishore appeared in over 20 movies, out of which at least 15 were duds. And it is said that since he was never serious about acting to begin with. Kishore Kumar did his best to irk the creators, which would more often than not, result in him quitting the project. But, his acting career got a new lease of life post mid 1950s when he was seen in a slew of successful movies, including the likes of Ladki and Naukari, among others. He established himself as a lead in some solid romantic comedies, and the audience loved to see him on the silver screen with other acting legends like Nutan, Meena Kumari and of course, with his partner at the time, Madhubala. Then there was of course, the 1954 release Naukri, the socio-political feature directed by Bimal Roy. In Naukri, Kishore Da displayed his dramatic flair, which was aplenty. His grounded act about the realities and hardsh...
