Kitab Khana (Mumbai)

This is a book lover's heaven. It is the best book shop we have seen in Mumbai especially in the Fort/Colaba area. The staff are really helpful in checking for specific books and the range on the vast shelving is wonderful. We visited twice during our 2 days in Mumbai and came away laden each time with book list items and also impulse buys. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. A good place in the busy Flora Fountain area. Next to Mulla House/ Davar College building. It is located on the ground floor. Kitab Khana has a good collection of books. The staff are very curteous and always ready to help you. The other advantage Kitab Khana is that it has a good coffee shop.. called Food for Thought. The food served at the coffee shop is excellent. The menu though limited offers difference combi. The deserts are also great. Must visit for everyone when in Flora Fountain area. Even if one is not fond of reading books, just visit the coffee shop and try the food. You will surely be back. Great selection of books at this Flora Fountain bookshop...always visit this shop after finishing at the equally excellent, but smaller Strand Bookstore nearby. The books are beautifully arranged, the place has a cathedral-like atmosphere and Mr and Mrs Sanghi run a very good coffee shop on the premises. They have got enviable location just opposite of fort circle and they have maintained good collection of book too. It is very easy to reach out there since fort circle is on every mumbai tourist's itin...

Mumbai: Kitab Khana opens its doors to booklovers again

It’s an iconic bookstore that’s had more than its share of troubles, but Kitab Khana is now open again, having weathered a year of lockdowns and pandemic-era restrictions as well as a large fire that gutted its interiors. A simple lamp-lighting ceremony was held to mark the reopening of the store on Thursday. A simple lamp-lighting ceremony was held to mark the reopening on Thursday. “We turn 10 today and will have a celebration to mark the occasion, but all in good time,” co-owner Amrita Somaiya said. It will be a while before the store can resume its popular events calendar, which pre-pandemic ranged from book readings to discussions and sessions for children. But already on day one, the small ceremony at the rebuilt store was followed by warm conversations as frequent visitors arrived, masked and distanced, to reconnect with the books and each other. “This is not just a place of transactional interests. It guards a common point where people crisscross and where social, cultural and intellectual interactions happen, both by chance and design,” said architect, author and city researcher Kaiwan Mehta, who visited on Thursday. “Now that it is up and about, a vacuum has been filled.” A void has been filled for Somaiya too. “We had a series of setbacks in the last year,” Somaiya said at the reopening. “My father, who had supervised the interior design of the bookshop, was suffering. And a week before his death, I received a letter of hope from a 12-year-old girl named Dania K...

Kitab Khana: Mumbai's Heritage Bookstore is a Love Story in Itself

By Vaidehi Nanivadekar How far would you go for the sake of love? To great lengths, sometimes. In 2011, Samir Somaiya and Amrita Somaiya opened the doors of their passion project Kitab Khana. Several plot twists—the pandemic and a massive fire—later, the bookstore is today back to its former glory, and book lovers like me couldn’t be happier. Standing just across from the lovely Flora fountain, Image credits: This bibliophile’s escape is housed in Somaiya House, one of the oldest buildings with colonial architecture in The sight of so many bookshelves surrounding you is very comforting. They have carefully placed a variety of books throughout the store. True to its vision of keeping books affordable for everyone, Kitab Khana offers a flat 20% discount on all books. You can pick one as per your mood and read to your heart’s content. The cafe at Kitab Khana is now managed by Subko Coffee, which means you get to pick from a fantastic menu. Try their Turmeric Toast with Paneer and Lavender Cold Brew. My own favourites are the Subko Strawberry Cruffin and Peppermint Mocha Iced Tea. The walls of Kitab Khana are festooned with quotes and sayings by literary celebrities like Robert Frost and Rumi. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep… Robert Frost They have sections on health sciences, architecture, and modern art, which are a must-explore. This passion project has been a beloved happy place for readers, writers, artists,...
