Narada case hearing to continue on Thursday, Kolkata police register case against CBI

The hearing at The development implies that the four heavyweight political leaders including two Ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim and MLA Madan Mitra and former Minister Sovan Chatterjee, arrested by the CBI on Monday, will have to spend Wednesday night in judicial custody. Three of the four arrested except Mr. Hakim were admitted to the State-run SSKM Hospital. The Kolkata police filed a case against CBI personnel under Section 51B of the Disaster Management Act. The case was filed at the Gariahat police station for violation of the restrictions imposed during the pandemic while arresting one of the accused. The CBI, along with the personnel of the Central forces, had picked all the accused early on Monday from their respective residences. Cbi: Calcutta HC directs police to hand over Raju Jha murder case to CBI

KOLKATA: On Wednesday, the Calcutta high court instructed the Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed the CBI to probe the case within four months. The court took on record a CBI report which said the petitioner, Narendra Kharka, is a chargesheeted accused in a coal scam case being investigated by the agency. The report also said Rajesh Kumar Jha, alias Raju Jha, was not an accused in any case being probed by the agency and was allegedly operating a coal syndicate between 2015 and 2020. The court also noted the CBI report which said that one of the persons who escaped the attack was Abdul Latif, an accused in a cattle smuggling case being probed by the agency. The counsel for the West Bengal government submitted that police had made substantial progress in the probe and were on the verge of wrapping up the case. Justice Mantha observed there is some merit in the submissions of the CBI that the FIR registered by Shaktigarh police station on April 1 "is vitally linked to the existing investigations being conducted by the CBI in the coal and cattle scams." Kharka had moved court after one of his employees was taken into custody by police in connection with Jha's murder and was allegedly tortured in custody.

Man posed as Enforcement Directorate official to extort Kolkata cafe owner

By Suryagni Roy: A man who impersonated an Enforcement Directorate official to extort a cafe owner in Kolkata has been arrested. On March 12, the accused, Sukumar Kamilya, went to Friends Cafe in south Kolkata's upscale Golf Green area, met the manager, Pravash, and asked for the phone number of the café’s owner, Priyanka Biswas. Kamilya then called Biswas and introduced himself as an ED officer and said that she would have to pay him a large sum of money to prevent the registration of a case against her.

By PTI KOLKATA: Kolkata Police has registered a case of unnatural death over the demise of renowned Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, and started an investigation, even as opposition BJP blamed the West Bengal government for lapses, drawing a sharp retort from the ruling TMC which asked the saffron party not to politicise death. A case of unnatural death has been registered with New Market Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the hotel falls where the singer felt unwell before being taken to a hospital," an officer told PTI. "We are scrutinising CCTV footage to understand what had happened before he was taken to the hospital," the police officer said, adding that two persons have been questioned in connection with the case. An initial probe has revealed that the 53-year-old singer, who was on a two-day tour to Kolkata to perform at two college programmes, was "almost mobbed" by fan followers at the hotel where he had returned to after performing at Nazrul Mancha auditorium in the southern part of the city, he said. "The singer had allowed a couple of fan followers to take snaps with him, but then he refused to carry on with the selfie session. He left the lobby and then went upstairs where he had reportedly stumbled and fallen on the floor. People who were with him informed the hotel authorities," the officer said. Kolkata Police has registered a case of unnatural death over the demise of renowned Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK, a senior officer said on Wednesday. The case has been lodged with New Market Police Station under whose jurisdiction falls the five-star hotel where KK had put up and felt unwell before being taken to a hospital on Tuesday night, he said. "We have started an investigation into singer KK's death and a case of unnatural death has been registered with the New Market Police Station. We are talking to the hotel authorities and scrutinising CCTV footage to understand what had happened before he was taken to the hospital," the police officer said, adding that two persons have been questioned in connection with the case.
