Traffic violations

Lakhs of traffic cases are pending in courts, the police said. File picture Pending traffic fines that could be cleared only after a physical visit to court can now be paid online. An online service to enable e-payment of pending traffic fines, a joint collaboration of Kolkata police and the judiciary, was inaugurated on Thursday. To start with, the police said, traffic cases pending with the Bankshall court — which cover prosecution by citation by the Headquarters, Howrah bridge, South and Jorabagan traffic guards — can be paid online. The facility will be introduced in the other 21 traffic guards shortly. Lakhs of traffic cases are pending in courts, the police said. “In the majority of cases, people are averse to physically visiting a court and standing in front of a magistrate to pay the fine. Many hire clerks to do the job but several others keep deferring the payment, leading to a huge backlog of cases,” said an officer of the traffic department. According to the rule, traffic violations such as jumping signals, speeding and violation of the no-parking rule could be prosecuted by citation, for which e-challans are generated and sent to the registered mobile number of the owner of the offending vehicle. If a motorist fails to pay the penalty within a certain time period, the prosecution details are supposed to be transferred to the court. If the penalty remains unpaid even three to four months after prosecution, chances are the court may issue summons to the motorist....

5 Cop Kiosks On Maa Likely Before Monsoon

Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) plans to set up five police kiosks on the Maa flyover to monitor traffic and manage emergencies which require towing away vehicles which have had a breakdown. Cops hope to put the remedial measures in place before the onset of monsoon when breakdowns usually increase. While three of the kiosks on Maa flyover will be manned by East Traffic Guard, two others will be manned by Tiljala Traffic Guard. Authorities will engage an agency for the job, the cost of which has been estimated at Rs 4.4 lakh. “The exact locations will be finalised after consulting the police,” said a KMDA official. Traffic cops said they had approached the KMDA for setting up the kiosks to ensure better coordination. They said it was recently discussed by Lalbazar top brass after multiple vehicle breakdowns on Maa and AJC flyovers. “Having more men on the flyover will stop speeding,” said a Lalbazar officer. Cops said they plan to position a breakdown vehicle near the boat club, allowing for immediate towing during busy office hours when over 150 vehicles use the Maa flyover.

Online Services

Representational image The Kolkata Traffic Police on Tuesday launched an e-No Objection Certificate (eNOC) service for lost vehicle registration certificate (RC) and driving licence (DL) as well as for other services. Presently NOC is issued from Lalbazar traffic counter for lost vehicle RC/DL, registration of vehicle from other state and migration of vehicle to other states. An applicant has to visit the Lalbazar counter and stand in the queue to collect the same with proper documents which is time-consuming," a senior police officer said. To ease the process of collecting the NOC, an online system has been developed by the computer cell of Kolkata Traffic Police. The applicants will need to visit Kolkata Traffic Police’s website, http://www.kolkatatrafficpolice.gov.in to obtain the eNOC. By submitting the required information into the portal an applicant will get the eNOC according to the requirements, he added. This will enable the applicants to collect the NOC with ease and will save time and money as this online service is available 24X7, he said, adding that this system generated eNOC has some security features such as QR code and watermark logo of Kolkata police.
